Oxygen of publicity and all that, I know, but what are your thoughts? I know that they have been present at Crufts before but this has made waves across the pond.

By the by, I Googled the BoB in the Shepherd ring, felt like organising a wee protest myself

Sorry for being a numpty but what does 'BOB' mean?

Hmm, well I'm not a massive fan of PETA to be honest. They come across as being a bit extreme and don't appear to have a balanced, objective view about things that take account of all the factors.

Just my humble opinion though and I take their point but its not JUST about the breeders (and there are those that DO breed responsibly), it goes beyond that.

I don't quite grasp the point of the protest to be honest. Sure we breed more dogs (and animals in general) than we need, but if the animal is well cared for, I don't see the problem. Euthanasia is not a welfare issue for the animal as long as it is carried out humanely. PETA seem to think that pure-breed breeders are responsible for the suffering of cross-breeds, but euthanasia is not suffering and if animals suffer it's not because other animals are brought into existence. Of course we should deal with the causes of animal cruelty, but I don't think that pure-breed breeders are one of them (at least not in this context. You could argue that they cause cruelty by breeding health problems, etc. but that's a different matter).

Sorry I am being dim, I don't get the Bon in the Shepherd ring reference!

What I don't get is, PETA are a real extremist organisation who don't believe animals should be pets, so why do Pet Owners support them??

Apparently the protesters at Crufts attempt to snatch your dog off you, given I will be holding the IWS all I can say to them is good luck, and if they wait until later in the day I'll probably hand him over gladly

Thanks, I get it now!

I Googled her as well...

WTF???? What is wrong with that dog? Have they taught her to really collapse her back end, or is she naturally THAT slopey?

Well if you pull a dog's leg back far enough and place her hock flush to the ground....I can push or pull B into a number of interesting shapes (Old English Dippy Back, straight back working line, German showline

) but...why would you want to? If people want to complain about overangulation, they are looking at the wrong countries....

Anyhoo, let's not start that again....

True

while I am sure she is a lovely girl and her owners love her, I just don't want to believe that people think 'that' is a good example of the breed and that it is her 'natural' shape.

I thought that all British GSD's had toplines like that too

Looking at the CKCS BOB I can agree that they look for different things in their show dogs in the USA than we do in the UK

I thought that too Gazey, all Alsatians have bad backs and hips don't they???

The IWS is actually a fairly nice looking IWS for the American version (Not the AWS) The Springer is a fairly nice dog too, but soooooooo much hair, you'd have to clip it before sending it into thick cover!!

Why do they show GSDs like that?

Like you say, it looks so unnatural.

[/ QUOTE ]

Who knows.
Of course, not everyone likes to see them gaiting laps upon laps of an athletic field either. Or indeed gaiting off lead. Or having all the required health test results and a protection work phase and a good progeny group in order to enter the top classes.

'Cause that's how I like to see them shown

I'm nosing through some of the BoB photos, and is it just me or are some of the dogs really fat? The Labrador and the Irish Wolfhound both look far too fat to me (the IW doesn't look like its tummy tucks up at all, and all the ones I've ever seen have been quite slim and lanky), but it might just be the light or something.

Don't worry, come over and stand with me and the monster Irish Water Spaniel and they won't try very hard! He reckons that looking like a curly poof means you have to act as macho as possible to compensate

They had better not try and snatch my dog either, i too would do someone an injury if they try
mad.gif

There were loads of warnings last year that PETA protesters were trying to do this, but apparently it never happened. As CC says it would have been quite funny to see them trying with some of the dogs.
