Hi,

I have a horse with classic hind gut acidosis symptoms. My vet has been out and given him a basic vetting, his teeth, back, eyesight, heart etc, everything is fine. But his gut is making some serious noises! He recommended keeping him off the spring grass and on hay and adding bran and Protexin gut balancer to his feed which is currently Hifi-Lite with Fast Fibre and Equivite Original and salt.
He has been on the new regime for nearly 3 weeks and have seen some improvement in his coat and weight but behaviourally he is still really bad. Not wanting me to mount, running away from my right leg in particular. He has also become really spooky. Not keen to pick up his back feet particularly the right hind. Very tense in the flank and not wanting to be touched or groomed there. Stamping his back feet and sometimes kicking his belly. He has also become very aggressive around food.
I have been looking at changing up from the Gut Balancer to the AcidEase but have also come across the RiteTrac supplement online.
I don't really want him scoped and he was a very stressy horse when I got him and it has taken a long time to build his trust, he can be extremely anxious and I don't want to put him under any extra undue stress. He is insured so I could go down that route but would like to try and help him without doing that.
Over the winter he has been a lovely boy. Quiet and relaxed. |We had been making such good progress, hacking out on our own and even starting to do some jumping. It's like he has had a personality transplant the last few weeks. I just want my lovely happy boy back!
Any experiences of these supplements or any other recommendations would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

sounds just like mine was, I recognise the symptoms.
Can I suggest equishure (which is also in rite trac) from saracen feeds. It is made by the same people ie KER as rite trac.
I have found the following works for mine
3 scoop equishure per day (preferably in 3 sep feeds)
evening good 15 ml scoop charcoal
morning feed scoop limestone flour and 2 very good 15 ml scoops bicarb soda
evening after feed a drink of warm bicarb water.

This combination seems to work well.

it may be for some, the above is the combination that works for my 2. It may seem excessive but then so did the 2k bill when he ended up in horse hospital which is what got me started on this. Some times of the year are better than others and I reduce the equishure. Oct and Nov are bad months so full dose of everything, less Feb/Mar and now is getting bad again with the grass. Trial and error for the individual horse but you are definitely describing hind gut problems. Serious noises at the moment and I would get going on both the equishure which does release some gas and charcoal.
Hope it works for you. It has transformed the lives of ours.

I have just ordered some Charcoal and have decided to try the Protexin acid ease as have had some good reports.
Is it okay to feed both in the same feed? The Charcoal won't 'absorb' the supplement will it?
