The local park has become the meeting point for various socially distancing. We keep out of the way, no idea if they like dogs, ours don’t go near people anyway.

One family had a just walking toddler who was making his way as fast as his little legs could carry him towards us. The boys had done a fair few retrieves so were starting to tire. Little man kept toddling towards us and the parents were talking to us-from a distance. Eventually, we put Bear in a sit and allowed the wee boy to go right up to him. Wee boy promptly sits with Bear. Zak then sidles up to see what he’s missing. He then lay down on the boy’s feet and allowed him to pat him! We were very close and Zak would have come away immediately if we asked, so I wasn’t too worried, the OH was virtually on top of him.

I‘m incredibly proud that Zak approached a person, albeit a very small one and that he was knackered calm enough to lie down and allow the baby to pat him. The parents took loads of photos and said it’s the first time the baby has ever touched an animal. I’m over the moon that his first experience was very positive, with both dogs just lying quietly and not worrying about being patted by an over enthusiastic toddler!

They are very beautiful dogs ?

my JRT is fabulous with kids. She’s excellent with all people but tends to want to jump up to get closer to people (very gently not in a boisterous way). With small kids she wouldn’t dream of it and just sits and enjoys all the attention. If they stop stroking her she ever so gently waves a front paw for them to carry on which of course kids love. It’s the first dog I’ve had that I can trust totally and it makes me proud every time.

Eh, that's completely not socially distancing - your dogs could be carrying it, your partner was stood right beside the child - why on earth did you think that was a good idea? Just walk away and don't be a spreader. Both families are now in contact via your dogs fur .

It's so important to give little ones positive animal experiences. Where I can I always try and let them say hello to mine as they are comfortable with. The dogs are watchful of kids but not enough as to make them unpredictable- I can sit either and theyll enjoy a fuss

I made the OH read this and he would like me to point out that I made out that he was ‘virtually on top of him’ when he had his hand up to keep Bear in a sit (old habits die hard) and was in fact 2 metres away. HTH.

I thought the animal fur study said it couldn’t be transferred that way or that there was very little evidence to suggest that it could? The dad did pick up Bear’s very spitty ball when we were encouraging Bear to look for it. It always amazes me that people do this.

As an aside, why haven't the police been issued with PPE?

If they are anything like the one I know they think they are invincible. Next doors son is a PC. He’s converted their garage (in a block) into a gym. He doesn’t live there. Almost every day he drives from his home with numerous work colleagues to use the gym equipment in a tiny garage. When challenged his defence was that he works with them all so already not social distancing ?

I think that’s very silly. My OH’s team all have to go out alone in the cars, which is ridiculous, because the minute a big incident starts, they need back up. He and 2 other colleagues had to arrest a shoplifter last week, all 3 of them had to pile on him. He hasn’t been given any kind of PPE.
