Pointless post but.....
This morning I got awarded my hunt buttons - it came totally out of the blue, and am absolutely chuffed.
The only down side is I am not sure if I can fit a new velvet collar on my hunt coat so may be forced into buying a new one!!!

congratulations! I was re-reading my letter the other day, and thought I should probably frame it for the loo. I was gobsmacked and chuffed to bits too, understand how you feel! you officially Know What You Are Doing now :)!

which shropshire hunt are you that has a collar?

Nice one Sidney, many congratulations. Any excuse to go shopping for a posh new hunt coat ;-)

Aniseed, hunt buttons are generally awarded to those members of the mounted field who are considered of use on the hunting field - many are won out autumn hunting by proving that you indeed know what you are doing, what the hunt is trying to achieve and don't act like a total moron, hooning about dangerously etc! It also helps to be an active member who go above and beyond in hunt duties off the hunting field such as helping with fund raising or in kennels.

It is a real honour to swap plain black buttons for the embossed hunt ones and where appropriate to add a distinctive velvet collar. Gentlemen are also permitted to wear scarlet coats with brass buttons after being awarded their hunt buttons.

now I didn't know that last bit!

Our hunt also awards buttons to those who have been members for in excess of ten full seasons - for kids you will be asked to "help" the huntsman with gates and holding his horse etc for a few days before your buttons are awarded, during which time he asks them about how to care for their pony after hunting (and "I get the groom to do it" isn't an acceptable answer!) and getting them fit, and about the hounds and the horn.
