My mare has unfortunately delevoped proud flesh on one of her leg wounds. Were trying steroid cream first.

Anyone dealt with proud flesh before? Did your vet recommend using steroid cream and did it have a positive effect?

Should the proud flesh be bleeding and looking quiet dark red? It looked a pinky/yellow yesterday which the vet see photos of. Today it's quiet red and bleeding when I've cleaned it.

I am not sure if it is too late to do this on your horse or even if it is recognised as a good idea now but years ago my vet bound a wound on the front of the fetlock joint with thick padding to prevent proud flesh. He replaced the dressing every week for 3 months. When the wound had healed the horse had a bald patch of skin but did not grow any proud flesh.

Steroid cream works well. Make sure its only on the flesh and cover with a dressing and bandage.

I've used it several times with great success.

I have had to deal with some nasty, large amounts of proud flesh on two horses.

On both I used Equaide, and it completely got rid of the proud flesh, no discomfort. I used it after an intial period of flamaxine, but both horses had extensive wounds and were always going to have proud flesh once the dressings were removed.
