We have had a HUGE breakthrough!!!
Afew days ago Betsy hated her crate, she would settle in there once she was put in and the door was closed but would not go in voluntarily (other than to eat) or stay in there for any period of time.
By chance I was on a very very rare cleaning mission and moved her crate to the other side of the room so I could hoover under it and the penny seems to have dropped in that daft little puppy head. She now wonders in and out of her crate all day and is even choosing to go in there with her toys!! I am so happy, I felt like a right evil mare locking her away when she obviously didnt want to be in there but now it is one of her fave spots! (no1 fave is daddys knee - of course!)
I can now say 'In your bed' and I have a puppy who actually LISTENS to me!!!
She is a very happy little thing and she is very eager to please, I think this little breakthrough has given her a bit of a boost because 'lie down', 'stay' and 'fetch' have all become words that Betsy is a pro at! We have had 'sit' for months now!
I am honestly so happy, how silly is that?? We need to work on 'off' and 'drop' and then I will think someone has switched my naughty puppy for an angel!
We have also been working on recall, she is brialliant in the house / garden and we have been using a long line on walks and she is really getting it! We are still in the 'mammy has to jump about and be an excited tit to get any attention' stage with recall in big exciting fields full of horse poo, but we are getting there.
The thing is.... I dont know when its ok to let her off lead? She's not like my older dogs who would just walk next to me out of pure loyalty.... she is loyal to anyone who looks interesting atm. I dont know whether to just drop the long line while we are in the field (if she is in a good mood!) and just see how it goes? The field is enclosed and there are no horses / cows / sheep in there for her to harass.
Ooops this turned into a bit of a ramble didnt it?
For those that endured my complete waffle, I would like to say thank you for those that posted on the thread regarding my old girl. You all really were an excellent support network for me, it was the hardest day of my life and the pain is still very much raw but your kind words really helped me.
