Just abit of a self indulgent post I suppose to mark a milestone in my progress with Pally. He's a 16.3hh (ish), rising 10 yr old Warmblood gelding. Been looking after and riding him for just over a year now, and he's just come back into work after a tendon injury back in May.
So, today I decided to go for an hours hack, but I allowed for an hour and a half as I know what he can be like.
Two hours later we returned, still intact atleast!
Clambered aboard him and set off down the road, with him bouncing, jogging, hopping, leg yielding and generally being over excited. Got him settled and we wandered along on a long rein for the first 20 minutes which was nice and relaxing.
I had decided to ride him to my house to visit my girl Boo in the garage, takes about half an hour to get from his owners house to mine, within the village. So just outside the village we encountered our first hurdle. A wood lorry.
Now, Pally does not like traffic at all, but wood lorries send him into hysterics
. I debated silently for a bit, and decided to push him on as normal, Pally has a reputation as a rearer and I have had first hand experience of this, but I was unbelievably proud when the wood lorry passed us, and admittedly he tensed right up, danced about the road abit, but in general behaved very well!
Few minutes later we encountered a tanker on a bad bend, unfortunately this was abit too much for him and he paniced and he did go almost vertical and try to spin round and bolt, but managed to contain him and the VERY nice driver switched off his engine and we managed to make a tentative walk past it. With me waving, smiling and nodding frantically at the driver thanking him for his kindness.
We managed through the village with alot of spooking and alot of "WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?" expressions
but in general he was VERY well behaved.
There he is outside our house, excuse the state of him at the moment. I didnt get a chance to see to his mane today either. GRRR.
Boo in my garage.
Anyway, climbed back aboard, decided to go back a different way, off road this time because I quite fancied having the shelter of the forest because of the AWFUL weather!
Anyway, quick view...
On the way back, we came across a little ditch that you have to pop over to get home, so I decided to ask him for a wee trot and see what he thought of it... and my goodness! This horse knows what to do with himself when he "jumps". I cant wait until hes fit enough for me to find some arena I can rent out and really see how he fancies fences.
So basically, for a 'problem horse' , I personally think hes just a bit misunderstood. And I absolutely adore him.
He just tends to panic, and then panic again because he thinks hes going to get a beating. Which I wont give him.
ANyway, sorry for long post, just feeling very pleased with him and its really something for me to look forward to, considering Boo is going to be out of all action for a long time, possibly forever. So yes.
Big smiles all round and a HUGE pat for Pally.
