Who would have thought it. We set up our Newmarket Charity In-Hand Shows this year purely to show those non-TB lovers, that Thoroughbreds can do other things apart from race, and are delighted to see not only Katie Jerram in todays H&H commenting on one horse (Strike Force) at our show she judged who is both racing and now showing at the same time, but also read Emma Berry’s racing column today in H&H, and saw that she has mentioned “Blackcurrant” who made his first appearance in the show ring at our July show and was spotted by Sue Rawding (another of our judges) and has now become part of Sue’s show team. Having won the Supreme Champion title at our show, he has since now gone on to get 3rd at the National Hunter Show and last week won his class at the British Show Horse Association’s National Championship.

We are delighted with the positive feedback we’ve had both from judges and competitors, and it makes it all worthwhile putting on these shows when we find out that horses are now being “head hunted” from both our shows.

Let’s hope we can find another “star” next year who will go on to have another successful career once it’s racing days are finished. (By the way, August’s show Supreme Champion was a 21 year old TB who had raced (even ridden by Lester Piggott) has had a number of foals and our show was the very first time in the show ring for “Lombard Ships”).

We're just so proud that we've been able to give the stable lads and lasses who were competing for the very first time, a chance to see what other careers their charges can do. It was also an eye-opener for a number of racing trainers who were there with their families experiencing the show atmosphere rather than the racecourses, and in fact, a couple of days later we were invited to one of their yards to have a look at all their horses and see if we could spot a future show star amongst their race horses. Many of the trainers said it's nice to know that their horses can go off to do other things, rather than worry about their futures.

We know many TBs have a good life outside of racing and even our own TBs and friends TB's have gone on to do other things, but our aim was to find a top show horse which had raced and could go to the top in another career, and that's why we had one ring (14 classes) purely for Thoroughbreds, with another ring for all other breeds.

If you want to come along next year - our shows are open for any and everyone in the country.

Well done and a great positive post too
