After reading a thread recently about whether a YO or livery should provide showjumps it got me thinking.

Now I dont mind either way, and have been on yards that do and those that dont, but do you think on a reasonably sized DIY yard (approx 13 owners), the YO owner should supply stuff like toilet paper? Washing up stuff? Tea and Coffee?

Just a pondering really because like I have said, I've been on yards that do and yards that don't, so I wondered what the 'norm' is?!

Personally, I don't think so. I would say that more naturally sits with the liveries who use the toilet/make drinks to come up with their own system

I think all depends on what services were laid out at the time of joining the yard.

My yard does indeed have tea and coffee, liveries buy the milk tho. Toilet paper is again already supplied :)

We only have 6 liveries on the yard so it's pretty easy going :)

Completely depends on the yard, their set up and their pricing structure.

At my yard currently I have access to loo paper, tea/coffee/squash, biscuits and microwave/fridge

On DIY yard we are all lucky to have own tackrooms for most. Most people have there own kettle and drink making equipment. There is a loo currently awaiting parts!
The schools two outdoor one indoor. Indoor has a few jumps, mirrors and wonderful large mounting block. One of the outdoor is schooling woodchip and the other sand the jumping school has good range of jumps. It saddens me that some of the users are guilty of breaking poles and jumps and not telling owners which understandably hacks the owners off when they come to use the school and find the mess.

No. DIY livery is essentially stable and field hire. We do have loo roll, cleaning supplies etc provided at my yard and there is always a brew available if you wanted one but I certainly wouldn't expect it.

As others have said,..it really does depend on the YO and what they would like to provide.

Personally, i'd like to hope that they DID provide the toilet paper if there was a toilet there for the liveries to use!!

I've been on yards that do both, but have always been happy to bring my own supplies as i drink de-caff coffee.

That said, i don't bother nowadays as i get on with my jobs and exercising my boy before heading home now. I used to spend all day at the yard when i was a kid and take my lunch and flask and biccies..the lot!!

Make them supply their own then the will look after it, incl coffee, tea, sugar, milk, it gets expensive boiling that kettle 26 times a day if 13 liveries decided to have a cuppa at the beginning and end of each day

I'm on a large DIY yard and we do have a couple of kettles and fridges and I think we have a microwave but nothing else is supplied. I have my own supplies of tea and coffee. I'd be happy to supply my own loo paper if we had a loo!

We do have some jumps but they are a bit dilapidated and it's up to the liveries to maintain them. We did have a collection on the yard to buy a couple of new jumps a few years ago.

I would expect toilet paper to be provided if there was a toilet, not too bothered about tea/coffee as I don't drink it :)

Wish we had a loo........... Or some where to make tea........... (None of the small DIY yards I've been at have had these)

I am luckily on a DIY yard where toilet, toilet paper tea and coffee is provided, however I would expect at least toilet paper to be provided. No one plans to suddenly need a wee and I know I sure as hell would be miffed off if I had to go and there wasn't a square of paper.
Tea and coffee is already at my yard, as well as a fridge with freezer compartment. I think most liveries bring their own mugs / specific brands of tea or coffee etc.
I am on a yard of 25 horses and 17/18 owners :)

Many years ago I kept my pony at a farm that provided a two hole 'long drop' toilet and a pile of newspapers. :eek4:

I think that if there is a toilet at the yard then there toilet paper & soap should be provided. I see no reason why tea & coffee should be provided.

At our yard the facilities are good, toilet is there with hot water & soap & also a hand drier. We have a little kitchenette with some cupboards & a kettle. We provide our own tea/coffee/squash, which I feel is right.

I've been at a small private yard that had one of those with a wooden plank with two holes (why two, lol, did people not wait their turn in times gone by?) in over a stone trough looking thing. It wasn't in use, thankfully :D

DIY means Do it Yourself.....

As far as person managing that yard, they should only need to supply ample and secure grazing and perhaps a stable.

Somewhere to keep your tack is desirable and usually expected plus maybe a school and somewhere to keep forage etc.

Other than that, it is get on with it!!!! Why on earth should they supply anything else? If they provide tea making facilities I dont see why they should pick up the bill for supplies!

We all used to buy our own jumps at last DIY yard, had fun shows and proceeds were used for jumps!!

FWIW our yard manager supplies loo roll and other fantastic facilities and is very helpful but I've also DIY'd where I had a field and the weeding, fencing etc was done myself....there are different levels of DIY!

I would expect toilet roll to be provided if there was a toilet but tea/coffee etc to provide for yourself. If it was part/full livery I would expect it all to provided

I expect nothing but am appreciative when things are provided. I carry a travel mug of coffee everywhere, so wouldn't use tea and coffee facilities anyway. They tend to be a bit of a health hazard on yards and the cost of coffee is too high to provide freely. I'd prefer my livery money is invested in repairs and maintenance.

At the yard I'm on, loo roll and soap are provided, but tea/coffee/hot chocolate all come from the hot drink vending machine - you pay for what you have, when you have it.

Ours was over a pit that probably hadn't been emptied since 1800. We were teens when we were on the yard and would scare each other with stories of bodies in there and long dead hands coming up from the pit to drag us in by our nether regions. It was in an old stone building and almost pitch dark in there if you shut the door which we never dared do. We'd just have a mate stand guard outside to protect us from the things from the pit and the pervy bloke that hung around. we always wondered about the two holes as well, it was like going to the loo was a social occasion in the olden days.

Question for you Dollymix.... If you were a YO (indeed you may be and are asking anyhow!!),...what would you provide??!

Please don't think i am criticising! As I said in my post, it just got my pondering when I read the other thread. I've been on yards that do supply stuff and ones that don't.

My current yard supplies a kettle and a fridge. There is also a toilet, sometimes with roll, sometimes without. There is always a towel and handwash though which is nice. We supply our own tea, coffee, etc and we generally buy our own stuff (although it's for use of the yard), eg I bought a mounting block and between us we bought some jumps.

I love my yard and am very grateful for what we have, I'm just being nosey what others think!

Personally, if I had my own yard (I wish) I think I would supply toilet roll and a kettle and fridge, everything else would be bring your own. Although I am a baker so liveries would probably be treated to a tin of goodies now and then lol! ( in fact my fellow liveries benefit from this already now and then even though I'm not the YO!) I think i would supply stuff for the yard though, like jumps, as they are selling point to attract more liveries? Could be put into the livery contract that if you break jumps you must replace them?

when we ran our yard we provided toilet facilities (ie roll, soap and towel) and a kettle, fridge and microwave - other than that you catered for yourself... now we don't have liveries there is never any loo roll in the loo - cos I'm too lax to organise it - and tend to go back to the house anyway - its warmer!

At my yard, we have toilet with toilet roll, soap and a towel. Tack room area has a fridge and kettle. Currently about 5 liveries and we all pay £2.50 a month to contribute towards tea, coffee, squash, sugar, milk, biscuits etc. Quite a sociable yard :-) And we all use it .... but I wouldn't expect this at every DIY livery yard.

We have a kettle and mugs provided by the YO, if we want tea/coffee/sugar etc we have to bring our own, same goes with loo paper!

We get toilet paper supplied :) Although ours is a mix of diy, part & full liveries & even on diy, hay is included & all waters in the fields are done for us too x

According to what I've heard, going to the toilet have sometimes been a much more social thing than what it is now. I've heard that a hundred years or more back, in some Swedish farm homes, the toilet was one of few places where you could have a private conversation with someone, because for example in the house, there was almost always other people around.
There have also been some royals, which has in history went to the toilet in public, e.g. Louis XIV of France, and if we go even further back, what used to be public toilets in ancient Rome looks to have been very public.
