Im not sure if I've got this wrong or not so thought I'd ask on here.

Being only 20 I can only tow VERY limited things and drive only a 3.5tbox which is proving difficult unless I was rich then someone said I could tow anything as long as I had L plates on and an adult with me(someone who could tow), even if I was loaded?

Is this true because if it is it would solve my problems as I could get a trailer/4x4 combi I could afford and take 2 horses and drive whilst I'm saving up to do the test... Rather than trying to find something that will let me tow on a B license?

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER

In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.

All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.

The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Yep :) It's well worth the fiver some L plates will cost!

I can't afford to do a trailer test for the forseeable future so will just carry on as I am (all the while gaining towing confidence) till I'm better off!

Bit of legal trivia

There is no law which says L plates must be removed when the learner is not driving or in the vehicle although the highway code does recommend doing so

I am right in understanding this applies for a c1 as well. I really want a lorry as my horse is petrified of them. Did the trailer test and passed for the old boy only to then purchase said horse who will only travel in lorry!! Lots of my horsey friends have grandfather rights so legally I could drive a lorry with them in with L plates. A good exchange for taking them out and about with pony me thinks. Hope I've got that right :) x

New supervising laws in April 2010 means that anyone supervising a learner in the categories C1 C1+E D1 or D1+E MUST now have passed a test which covers those categories so only having a pre 1997 one of those categories means that no supervising a learner is allowed

Check your licence HAS got it on provisionally too first. When I did the test the examiner confirmed I did have provisional entitlement, aparently not all licences do so wise to check.

Yep I do have the provisional just need to magic up some funds to do the test!! At least it's practically the same as the trailer test minus the coupling of course so hopefully should find it ok!!

Colouredcob well worth paying for at least one lesson and doing the test in the examiners vehicle and trailer. They have all the hints and tips you need (such as you can reverse close then pull the trailer on to hitch up!). Their trailer is also nearly always the smallest you can get away with for the test and follows the vehicle nicely round corners etc.

I had a lesson costing 60 quid then another half hour before the test and passed it with no faults ;)

i will defo be doing this, i've already done my trailer test though this is proving not to be so useful due to stubborn cob refusing to travel in one!! will travel in lorry no probs so just thinking about doing this, also seen a few lorries that you can pick up cheaper than a trailer so kinda wishing i'd done this first. my instructor told me the C1 is practically the same as the trailer test apart from the medical and everything but no reason why i shouldn't pass this. i will speak to some people round here and see how much they think it would cost but £60 + plus test seems reasonable to me!!

LGV C1 test is very different apart from the fact that the same marking sheet is used for the road drive

As you mentioned there is the D4 form medical
Two theory tests - HPT and multi choice
Training is usually over 5 full days shared of half days 1 to 1 with test on day 5

All that would likely cost in the region of £1000 to £1200 !!

Was the B+E instructor who told you also a LGV instructor?

Can I just say thanks for your info ROG, as I had a friend in bother last week needing transport, and because I've read your travel threads etc, I knew I was legal and transported her horses for her (with her in the car as my supervising adult).
I've got more this week to travel and hopefully I'll get my towing test done in the next couple of months. :)
