My 6 year old thoroughbred mare has just recently come back from a full lameness workup and it has been discovered that she has PSD (inflammation only) in both her hind legs. She was also X-rayed at the same time for kissing spines and this has also come back as confirmed. She is now home and is to receive 3 rounds of shockwave therapy followed by steroid injections at the clinic on her third round. 4 weeks after this she will go back to the clinic again for a lameness check and also to have steroid injections for the KS. The vets did not advise me to keep her stabled but to instead put her out into a small enclosed paddock. Sadly I do not have the option for this where I am currently so she is going out as normal in a big field with her friends from 5.30am to around 7.30pm. So far everything has been fine (no charging about the field trying to self harm!) but since the owners decided to swap the mare and geldings field, she has become a demon when trying to bring in. She is happy to be caught and to walk so far, then plants but is happy to walk on. She makes a fuss of constantly looking back to her friends before exploding into the air the further away she gets. Rearing, bucking, kicking out, falling in circling round me to try and go back, screaming to her friends etc. Although the sudden onset of napping and rude behaviour is far from ideal and measures are taken to keep myself safe when bringing her in, I am more concerned about the fact that this small period of explosive behaviour will do damage to her treatment and rehab? This behaviour is so unlike her! Dont get me wrong, she has her moments as any mare does, but she has no separation issues, just a lack of confidence when out schooling or hacking.
I really don't want to keep her in the stable for her own safety as well as mine (and my part loaners) as this is the only time she behaves like a wild mustang. It's ever since she switched fields which was three days ago. I am supposed to be starting to walk her in hand for 15 mins a day on solid surface as part of her rehab and I have been excited to get stuck in with improving our hacking confidence up until now. I'm now fearful of her acting the exact same way when leading her out down the lane incase I have no control when a car comes past etc. I'm trying to stay positive but I am unsure as to what to do for her health and my sanity! Praying she calms down but so far its been the same performance each evening I bring her in
