My horse is having the neurectomy and fasciotomy operation, I am wanting to know others experiences...how long on box rest, exercise regime, turnout etc. Any success stories would be gladly received!
Two friends of mine have done this in the last few years.
Horse 1- Had only one leg done, was home within 5 days. The owner took the decision to send him to a rehab yard for the 6 months as the Livery yard she was at wasn't set up for the recovery. They had him on the walker and slowly built up turnout pen size till he was settled. Was ridden in walk from month 2 and built up very slowly from there. End result was super muscled horse, very fit and ready to go on after the 6 months. Was out competing (dressage) at 10 months post op.
Horse 2- Had Bilateral done, was returned home in 7 days, onto a livery yard, they didn't have a walker and they couldn't hand walk him easily, turnout ended up him galloping about. After 6 months he was still lame so they PTS.
Would strongly recommend that if you are looking into it, horses tempermant and facilities are the biggest considerations
Thanks for your reply. I will have to think carefully about the facilities available to us. She is fairly sensible so hoping will cope ok with the box rest and controlled exercise but the quicker I can get back on board the better as we have really good hacking on lanes which will be good for strengthening.
