So it all started with a lethargic horse...bloods all came back clean, even EMS eventually! So that's good. What's not good is the diagnoses of PSD. Vet would like to send horse for surgery, will cost around 3k hopefully insurance will cover it although all the diagnostics are eatng into the money as we speak. But I have not made up my mind. Part of me says "go for it with the insurance money but will have to stop if we blow the budget" part of me thinks "is it really in his best interests"

Firstly said horse is a sod to box rest, he's not much better in the paddock, gets in a right old state when other horses go past or his friend goes out. I am also slightly skeptical of the surgery as surely it just masks the problem and you are still in effect riding a lame horse. Will the ligaments get even more damaged and the horse can't feel them? Horse is used for dressage, so needs to be able to be schooled again. Vets are obviously pushing for the surgery. The other thing I'm worried about is this is only the start and we will find more and more issues along the way.

Does anyone have experiences of this?

Sorry to hear your news. I can't really offer any advice but if you are on Facebook there is a page psd discussion group which is full of people going through the same problem. How was your horse diagnosed? I only ask as I've had problems with my boy for ten months and the only thing we haven't done is scanned his hind suspensories, although he has had a bone scan and that was clear

My mare had a 2 stage bone scan and didn't pick up her psd,as the ligament is encased in so much bone and thick membrane, mine was finally diagnosed with a nerve block and ultrasound scan, took 8 months to get the diagnosis and 3k of insurance..I've ended up paying for the surgery myself which she had 2.5 weeks ago

Wow. That is so unfortunate. I hope she recovers well.

My horse didn't have the surgery as I guess his was milder. I woudl say that any recovery generally involves restricted turnout/box rest for this injury so don't let that cloud your decision with the surgery. Mine had shockwave therapy and 3 months box rest I think, the lots of work in satright lines.

I would however look at your horses leg/foot balance as a long term solution, whatever you decide to do re the surgery. Since taking my boys shoes off (not sure if yours is shod or not :) ) that leg with the PSD has developed an odd shaped foot with a flare which I think supports whatever weakness/inbalance he has further up - makes sense to me anyway!
