Type 1 isn't common in pure bred welshies, but then it wasn't thought to be in the new forest ponies either until about 2 years ago.
I don't think there is every any harm in following a PSSM appropriate diet and seeing how they go. Off the grass (weeing a lot can be a sign of EMS as well - body getting rid of sugar), low NSC diet and vitamin E. I know a few people with diagnosed type 2 horses who have found adding essential amino acids really helpful.
Worming up to date? Someone emailed me from the PSSM forum to say their suspected PSSM case was actually riddled with tapeworm.
Are you in a tick area? Lyme is getting more common and can present much like a myopathy.
I've mentioned on another thread today that gel injections into my mare's hocks have made a huge difference whereas steroids did nothing. She was investigated for SI problems and although they found a tiny arthritic change and injected her, I'm pretty sure her problems were hocks related. I can now do hind leg stretching without risking my life and so can only imagine how sore she must have been.
