PSSM supplement doses and progress

Sorry me again so my alcar has come and the vitamin e. How much alcar do I feed the mare is about 550kg? How long before we should start to see a difference?

Thanks all for all the information. I finally spoke to the vet he said keep dry so do rug.

Dr Kellon is the advocate of Alcar and she has written a good article for Forage Plus with the amounts in. It didn't work for my mare, but if it does work then you tend to see the results quickly. If you can't see an improvement within a week then it probably isn't going to happen.

Is your horse definitely type 1? If so then the next step is adding fat to the diet if Alcar isn't a success.

I would change just one thing at a time and personally I'd do the vitamin E for a week before introducing the Alcar. Vitamin E deficiency can present as very similar to PSSM. 10,000iU will cost you a fortune, but worth dosing at that level for a week to see if there is an improvement.

Changing just one thing at a time is hard (I wanted to throw everything at my mare!), but it really does show you what is working and what isn't - and in the long run saves money.

Thank you that is great. We don't know currently but I suspect type 2 we are going to try it and see what happens we have tried just about everything else so worth a shot.
