Our 16 year old TB ex-point-to-pointer has always been "psycho mare" but has been "safe psycho".....until now! She's due to foal next Spring and my daughter had hoped to continue riding her for several months and do some light cubbing (sorry - autumn hunting!) with her (she's actually easier to hunt than hack!). However, since her return from stud, she has just got worse and worse (I actually posted a week or so ago asking for suggestions for "brakes") and is now infact becoming dangerous. My daughter used to describe her as the safest horse you could possibly ride - ultra-lively, strong and bouncy but totally predictable and SAFE (never bucks, rears, spooks etc). But now she's not only unstoppable but trots around her own huge field almost LOOKING for things to "frighten" herself with...and that's when she's turned out with her "chums" - cranky mare! My daughter came back from a short ride on her today, saying "I'm retiring her!" (that is, until after the foal is born!) "She's dangerous!". Only two trots and the sweat was pouring off of her. Forgot to mention that she's living out at the moment on good pasture, receives no shortfeed and, when she came in from the field this morning, my daughter tied her up in the yard and she was SHAKING with excitement! Anyway, before we turn her away completely, I'd like to hear what you lot out there have to say about "calmers"! I rang Blue Clip today (we swear by their products!) to enquire about their new product, "Karma". They told me that they've have good feed-back but I wonder whether it's likely to have any benefit for our cranky Scare McClare! SO.......has anyone out there used this product OR can anyone recommend a calmer which actualy works and is safe for an in-foal mare???? Look forward to hearing from you!

Not going to make any recommendations because I am really not sure which are safe for males in foal. I have found, though, that Global Herbs are really knowledgeable and that their products are effective and they do a broad range of calmers, so it might be worth giving them a ring

My friend had 3 fols off her mare but never had her scanned because you knew if she had taken, she would change completely. You wouldn't be able to catch her unless she wanted you to and wouldn't let any other horse near her. Maybe the same thing, but to the extreme? We just used to let her get on with it, she was such a good mom it was best not to interfear. She would always foal when we weren't there too, she once did it in the 30 mins we had popped out!!!! Never had to use a calmer, as long as my horses don't have sugar they are fine, so can't comment on that. have you ever had a foal from here before? Do you know he stud well? could something have happened to here there? Maybe it would be best to rest her while she in foal, the stress can't be doing either of them any good!

I have used Blue Chip Karmer...and worked for me, but not so sure for pregnant mare!!!... ask your vet for any recommendations ....

i have just started using Blue chip Karma so dont have any feed back as of yet BUT having read the bottle you can give a dose and hour before you want her calm i.e. shows or hacking lol. my TB ex racer mare is really edgey and i tried magic but it was pants but ive also heard good things about the karma so we shall see. but please enquire about giving it to preggers mares first!!

What is she normally like when she is on her summer holidays, I presume it is shoes off and guzzle all she wants in peace? If that is so, that is what I would do now with her, completely rough her off and let her chill out. As someone else said, the stress she is putting herself under is not good for her (or the rider!) I would be whipping those shoes off sharpish if it was me and make her think she is on her holidays for now!
Many mares change completely when pregnant, real Jekyll and Hydes; Bea is normally sweetness and light with other horses but since becoming pregnant, she has turned into boss horse with a vengeance and thinks nothing of using her teeth and feet to make her point so she might be one that enjoys being in work more than being pregnant. Twiggy on the other hand is much more chilled than she usually is!

Also have to say, I have never used a calmer but I rate Blue Chip Original for taking the edge off anyway, the foals wean very well with it if that is any help. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies! I've spoken to Blue Chip who have told me that Karma is safe to use with pregnant mare but her behaviour is so extreme that my daughter thinks she should be turned away until the foal is weaned. She had a foal seven years ago - foal's by Primitive Rising and now a very successful point-to-point mare. However, my friend, who owned her from about 5 years old, when purchased from Donacaster Sales, left her at the Stud (Louella - where she covered this time, too) from when she covered until after the foal was born, so I have no idea what she was like during this time. Damn - no horse to cub on since other ex-pointer (useless - his form reads ppppp - honestly! - but he's perfect for us!) apparently gets very strong out hunting! Hey ho....that's horses for you!
