PTS and Disposal options around South Denbighshire/Wrexham/Gwynedd borders

Hello. After putting it off for about 5 years, I've finally plucked up the courage to "make the call" and speak to my vet about having my elderly mare PTS. It would be selfish of me to put her through another winter. I've set a date but the cost is concerning (approx £450 for the PTS (vet), £200 for disposal (fallen stock company)). In an ideal world, money shouldn't matter but it does. There is already going to be a big dent in my heart so I don't really need a big dent in my bank account too. Without sounding heartless, are there any cheaper ways of doing it? I've googled for knackermen but can't find any. I'm trying to contact hunts but their contact details seem rather difficult to get hold of without paying a membership fee. I could really do with a local that knows about these things.

My heart is currently breaking. Rehoming is not an option.
 
I can't help with saving any money but you've made a brave decision and I hope you can carry it through smoothly.

I paid a knacker man £170 earlier this year in N Derbyshire.

Obviously I don't your thoughts of how to PTS, my knacker man would do it in the removal cost therefore saving the vet fee. Your fallen stock company may do it or know of companies that do would it be worth asking them.

Unfortunately, they only pick up horses. They won't dispatch them.
 
Hopefully someone will come up with some ideas. I’ve always used the vet, but the prices have gone so high I’m considering using our local fallen stock people who apparently don’t charge any extra to pts.
 
If you’re on the Cheshire Horse FB page then someone asked similar not so long ago. There were some decent sounding recommendations on there.

ETA Bradshaws of Whitchurch was recommended by several different people, but don’t know how far he travels.

I used Oakfield Equine who are in Mid Wales. They only collected for me but they do pts as well. I think they cover quite a large area so may be worth a call. They were absolutely lovely
 
I used these people, whose information I found on the BHS website. https://www.equine-endoflife.co.uk/
They have the network of contacts for local knackermen and are members of the stock disposal scheme. The man they found for us was brilliant - kind and caring and did a very good job. It’s much, much cheaper than using your vet. The actual pts is free, you just pay disposal.
 
Maybe ask the vets about a payment plan if this is the only option? It’s not an easy decision, we just had a 38 yr old boy pts by vets. He was still as bright as a button but sadly couldn’t keep any weight on.
