Thank you everyone. I did read these but its been so difficult to come back to this thread.

Sam poohed when we took him out in the car (a development the last few weeks) so we took him a short walk before taking him anywhere.

That last day Mr FP took him and I took Tia to meet them so they came around the corner and when he saw us he was let off lead and bounced over to us. I felt so hopeful.
In the car and he poohed within a minute. He couldn't get out of the car (we have a ramp) so tidied up around him and continued.
When we got to the vets, we had to lift him out as he couldn't move. He sat on the pavement and I managed to get him moving. We went in and when we got there again he just sat down. It was so unlike him.
A discussion with the vets and it was deemed to be in his best interests considering the weekend he'd had and painkillers needing to be increased and more frequent.

Tia has been very lost without him and come almost everywhere with us. We've slowly started to leave her by herself.
We have a huge hole in our hearts and life as he was such a big personality.

What a lovely boy. They’re such amazing dogs. They get right under your skin. Your loss will be huge and it is doubly upsetting to see another dog grieve for their lost companion ?. I hope Tia will soon bounce back.
Please take comfort from the fact you gave him a great life and kept your end of the bargain to never let him suffer. He would thank you for that.
You have my deepest sympathy ❤️‍?

Sam is 14 years old and a GSD.
He's had arthritis for a few years plus a tumour for a couple of years.
How do you decide when is best to let them go?

He's eating, drinking, still wants walks and sometimes initiates play with Tia.

He's had a librela injection and due the second one tomorrow. He's on 400 gabapentin twice a day.

How do I know he's not in pain?
How do I know I'm not just killing him?
Is it fair to just keep adding pain killers? Is that for him or me?

Everyone says you know when it's time and yet I don't.

You will know, you can see it in their eyes. We had our springer/collie PTS last year, she was 16 and the last two days it was obvious she had just had enough. It was a not a hard decision in the end it was in her best interest. We then lost our springer in July last year and that was devastating as she started being sick and two days later having seen vet, given anti sickness jab and antibiotics she had to be PTS with complete liver failure.
