My lovely mare is being PTS. She is being injected and then buried. There are 4 in the herd and in the past when my pony (a bay) was PTS the others wandered up to him, sniffed and then walked away and never called - they realised he was dead. When my old mare went - she was appaloosa and very light. When I turned the others out they were scared of her and didn't go anywhere near - I think it was they just saw a bit white lump in the field and just avoided it. They called for 2 days. My question is should I have the horses out in the field when its done so they realise whats happened or should I keep them in and see if they will sniff her when I turn them out? My mare is black. I don't want to panic them if they are all out together when she suddenly goes down.
 
I left my other two out when my pony was done. They watched from a short distance, and knew. They looked, paced around a bit but didn't call. I would do this again if I had to.

I did what you suggested and it was fine. They all sniffed her and Breezy my other horse who has always known Chloe since she was born looked really worried and concerned. Choe was the leader. I got them in whilst the digger man came and then turned them out. Since then they have not left the grave side. Very sad. Thanks for your advice.
