Hi,

I'm currently training towards my PTT and have the BHS book and an old Maxine Cave PTT book but any other suggestions?

Also can someone explain the difference between the outline linked coaching session plan and the Coaching session planning form

thanks!

The linked coaching session plan is a series of lesson plans (which are the planning forms) which are in some way liked to show how you might plan lessons for (as an example) a riding school group lesson which you teach on a weekly basis.

The Islay Auty book on Coaching Skills for Riding Teachers is a good resource.

Are you receiving any tuition? I can recommend a trip up to Huntley in Gloucestershire - they will be able to give you good training and guidance.

Hi thanks for that. I've got a training day at hartpury in November to find out where I am in terms of being ready, its just the paper work side, so the linked plans are good to future plan ongoing lessons and the other coaching session forms are for each individual lesson? Also for the exam do you need to take along pre completed risk assessments from lessons before the exam or does this form part of the port folio after the exam? I assume when I enter they will send through more info?

When you enter you will receive masses of info.

Risk assessments etc form part of the portfolio. You will be expected to make an 'on the spot' risk assessment when you are teaching during the exam, you will not write it down but will need to identify risks and, if necessary, take steps to reduce or remove them (ie, rider without correct footwear, lunge/lead rein horse without neck strap, asking riders to be aware of x happening outside the school, checking if any horses kick).

Your PTT lesson plans and presentations will be looked at on the day (though not normally your lesson plans/records for lessons outside the exam, these are assessed with the portfolio)

All the info you need is on the BHS website - if you download the complete syllabus and the learning resources package - it's very long but very useful, and has all the lesson plans, generic risk assessment forms that you need. I don't know if it's only here (NI) that they do it, but our candidates are given a risk assessment form to fill in on the day, which later becomes part of the portfolio, and are also given a short written test on jumping distances and modifiers (the changes you would make to distances if you were teaching eg novice riders/small ponies/stuffy cobs/comp horses etc).

Obviously you need to read around the learning resources material, but this is where Google is your friend - there is a huge amount of info out there, and it is so much nicer for the assessors if candidates can come up with something other that what's in the resource pack :D

There are also a few books available, one on lesson plans that I can think of and others on flatwork and jumping exercises, which you can use to make your lesson plans more unique and interesting. All your lesson plans, related plans, lectures etc must be written up before the exam. The syllabus tells you everything you need to know :)

Themed Lesson Plans by Melissa Trout. It's actually more a collection of exercises but my students find it quite useful (since I absolutely refuse to spoon feed them!) ;)
