At the moment I don't have any public liability insurance due to not going out hacking or showing, however a new horse has moved to the yard and the owner has offered to go out hacking one day with me (we have lots of off road hacking) as her horse "nannies" young and nervous horses, which would be perfect for me. My question is: do I need public liability insurance to go off road hacking?

As I understand it you really need public liability whether you ride or if they are just a field ornament. What would you do if they escaped from your field and caused an accident? How would you pay out if you aren't insured?

The only insurance I ever bother with is third party and I would never have a horse without it. There are so many ways your horse could do damage it's just not worth the risk.

You need third party cover unless you own the yard then you need and should already have unless your mad ,public liability .
The BHS gold membership is an easy way to get third party cover .

A recent court case demonstrated that horse owners require third party public liability insurance to no less than £10,000,000 (Ten million pounds) as even if it is not the horse owners fault they are liable for any accident that their horses cause. Ensure that you get this level of cover as not all policies provide this level of cover. If you become a 'Gold' member of the BHS then they provide this level of cover with your membership.

Okay thank you! I'm thinking of going for the bhs junior gold membership since I am under 21. Does anyone know if I can do monthly payments and how much it would be? Thanks

Not quite true , you are liable for injury your horses cause when they stray even if you have not been negilent in any way .
You are not always liable if say horse in an an accident with a car while you're riding it or kicks a dog who strays into its field .

The problem with liability insurance is that it encourages litigation. No win no fee solicitors will sue people with liability insurance as they know the insurance company will pay. If you don't, there is a good chance they won't take the case on as they know the probability of them being paid is much lower.

And the problem with not having it is that you or your parents can lose everything they own .
