My mares bottom eyelid was a bit puffy when she came in from the field yesterday. It had been weeping and was a little bit gummy in the corner (not much). I bathed it with water and got as much of the gum out as I could - she didn't seem distressed by it.
This morning it's still the same - no better, no worse. Bathed it again.
I guess it's been irritated and she's rubbed it till it got sore.
If it doesn't get any better how long would you wait before getting vet out?
Sorry if a numpty question - she's my first horse, had her for 6 months and is never ill so I don't get much practice!

Use some golden eye ointment ( you can get it at Boots over the counter) clears up mild eye infections very quickly! My old boy has had exactly the same thing this week and years ago on another horse I used golden eye ointment with great results and was surprised you could still get it!

Make sure that you keep the flies away from her face and bathe her eye keeping any grunge cleaned away as you have been doing.

She already wears a fly mask but managed to get it off yesterday - not sure if she got it off because she was rubbing an irritated eye or whether the eye got irritated after she got the mask off.

all 3 of mine came in sunday with puffy weepy eyes and one isnt even kept in the same place as the other two. think it is to do with the heat and high pollen count. mine were all fine yesterday

Mine had this a few days ago, keep it clean, i use vaseline on bottom of his eyelid and around to stop the weeping sticking to his skin, also use viscotears everyday as matter of course and this stops his eyes running.

I had five come in with the same thing a couple of days ago, one ponies eyes were particulaly swollen. It does seem to happe when its thundery and humid with all the flies associated. They didn't have fly masks on as it had been raining so much the day before. I bathe the gunk out with warm slightly salty water and put some arnica and witch hazel gel on the eyelid (obviously not getting too close to the eye) and the swelling goes down noticeably in about an hour. Fly masks are definatly the way forward

I would suspect this isn't a reaction to anything airbourne as only one eye is swollen - which suggests to me she got something in it / rubbed it too much.
She's timed it well though because I was giving her the week off anyway.
Presumably if after several days it's not changed call the vet?

I you think there is actually something in the eye then you should prob get the vet out to be honest. When mine came in only two of them had both eyes slightly puffy, the others only had one eye puffy. If you can get hold of some gel and try it at least you could see the eye better if the puffiness goes down a bit. Hope its ok

I would get the vet out to check there is nothing in the eye, my horse had a lot of eye problems. Bath with cooled boiled water, and if you can give a dose of bute. Thats what I used to do and his was back to normal the next day.

Mine is prone to conjunctivitis which usually starts with a puffy eye. I've had the vet for it a couple of times as it can get quite bad. These days if he gets a puffy eye I usually put some brolene or golden eye on it, give him a packet of bute and leave his face mask on 24/7 and its always been fine with 24 hours and we've not had the vet since we've been treating it like this (this was what the vet recommended).

My mare has the same puffy eyes this evening and the vet suggested using chlorphenamine/Piriton in the past. Just wondering though if you could use sodium cromoglicate (Opticrom antihistimine eyedrops) on horses?

Has anyone tried this?

Wash her eye out with teabag water...no joke...we've had a few cases on our yard & this is what the vet has said to do!!!!!! Nice and cheap to!!!!

Swelling was down last night - not gone completely but nearly there. It's only the bottom lid (at the tear duct end) and the eyeball itself seems fine. I could tell it had been less weepy yesterday too.
