Livery's new horse arrived on last week. She's lovely, 5yr old WB. Was turned out with her perspective fieldmate and they bonded brilliantly, had a good canter around and a few bucks etc, and are now getting on wonderfully. The other morning, livery noticed her back legs looked "puffy". the legs are perfectly normal down the cannon, and then look swollen around the fetlock. Hock, cannon, coronet and hoof are all fine, its just the fetlocks and about 3 inches above look larger then normal. Horse isn't lame in any gait, or holding weight off either of them. There is no extra heat and they don't feel particularly hard or super fluidy really. Any thoughts? I thought maybe she overdid it in the field running around or something, livery did say they were having a good old time!.

My tbs back legs become puffy/fluid filled around the pastern and fetlock if he goes from 24/7 turnout to stabled over night. I usually walk him around the yard for 10 minutes or so and there back to normal. Once hes used to the lack of movement whilst stabled they stop filling. Dont no whether that helps or not :o

Is the horse kept in during the night? My PBA gets puffy hinds if kept in over night, they go down once she moves around a bit.
Then again if she`s out and looning around it may be from that, if theyre still puffy today i give your vet a call and ask his advice

i would guess wind galls. My mare's legs are always up and down with them. Especially if the ground is hard. They are nothing to worry about but i would think it might be best to check with the farrier/vet to make sure that's what they are

Many thanks for the replies. She is stabled at night, and out during the day (for about 3 hours in the morning, and 3 in the afternoon). They are still up a little, but after moving they do settle. Still no heat/lameness or pain to touch/squeeze. Interesting point about the diet, hadn't really thought of that, although I did suggest that the grass on the field is unbelievely good and lush at the moment (hence only on it for a very short time), maybe that had something to do with it. Will suggest the feed thing. She's calling the vet for some advice tomorrow at the yard. Feet are really good, unshod, lovely and hard/good makeup. The mare did really hare around the other day, maybe she just needs to take it easy for a while.

Thanks again
