Pug 406 diesel towing

I have just bought a 406 2l diesel estate and am going to try it with just one 15 hander -- will be really keen to hear the answers to this.

It depends on how heavy the trailer is, my Bahill is only 650 kilos so I can easily pull one horse with a car. I was just wondering if anyone else used a peugeot 406.

In theory you could, should the plod pull you up and ask what the maximum your trailer can carry and is your car towing capacity over that you may be in trouble. An estate car, no matter how much it can pull, is not make to tow and isn't powerful enough to get you out of trouble the 4X4s. The Peugeot 406 can tow 1500kg, so by the time you have put haynet, water and horse in the trailer you will be pushing it being safe to tow with, never mind legal.

When I towed with my 405 I took the trailer with my horse to the weighbridge and they weighed in at 1250 k. I always make sure I travel light so don't carry my water in the trailer. I'd love a 4 X 4 but I simply couldn't afford to run one. As long as you have a light trailer you can still pull it legally and safely. I only travel locally and always check the ground where we have to park beforehand, if it's a mudbath I don't go because I haven't got a 4 X 4 to get us out.

Apologies if I'm being a bit dim here, but if the water is in the car doesn't it count towards to the overall weight the car has be able to move (ie itself, people, equipment, trailer horse etc etc)? I can see it will make the weight in the trailer less but I'm not sure overall what difference it makes if it's in the trailer or in the car?

I think it's the weight of the trailer as it shouldn't be heavier than whatever's towing it. I think it's an advantage if there's more weight in the car but I'm sure someone will tell me otherwise!

Before the current towing legislation came into force some years ago, Peugeot 405 estates (which are very similar to the 406) were about the most common car at smaller shows, often with 2 ponies in the trailer. You could get masses of kids/kit in the car. I did a lot of Pony Clubbing like this.

the kerb weight is 1500kg as is the max towing weight so a single horse trailer is ok, but EU regs so tow car must be capable of towing the MAM of the trailer, not what's actually in it, so only the single horse trailers have an MAM less than 1500kg.
