Pull on over reach boots - driving me crazy

My silly horse keeps pulling his shoes off so have bought him some pull on over reaches (the idea being that they will also be hard to pull off, whereas velcro ones wouldn't be - especially in the mud we have at the moment!)

But can't for the life of me get them on! Have bought XL ones when he'd normally have large so they are long enough, so figured they'd be fairly easy to get on, but no! Have tried using loops of baling twine on each side to pull them apart, but didn't work.

Any ideas?

Could you try soaking them in hot water beforehand?

We always use the Woof Wear velcro ones. The racers are out all day in the in this horrid sticky mud and tbh we don't get many boots come off :)

My old mare was very good at getting her over reach boots off, without any splits in the rubber...after I had spent forever trying to get them on!!!

if you dont have any luck with your pull ons, you could maybe try a pair like these -

mine have lasted years and never come off in the mud or wet like the velcro ones

I turn them inside out, give them a 'wiggle' to get them to the widest part of the hoof then give a good tug! :) Once I got the hang of it I never had any trouble, but sounds like yours are pretty tough. Would agree warming the rubber in some way might make it easier to stretch. Also, no idea if this would work, but putting somthing like vaseline inside the rim could help them to slide on better?

i have just done EXACTLY the same thing..... mine pulls shoes quite regularly if he's not turned out with o/r boots on, and i got sick of walking the fields every day to find the lost velcro boots (but only ever finding everyone elses and not mine...) so i gave up and bought a pair of pull ons for the same reasons as you. i now remember why i HATE them so much.... battle to get them on every morning, with or without soaking in hot water.

so i have bitten the bullet and bought some of the westrop petal boots (they're only going to be for use in the field so i wont be embarrassed by the flappyflappyness of them when riding!!) as im hoping they wont be as easily removed as the velcro ones. they are expensive, but i figure if they last long enough it'll work out cheaper than buying new rubber ones once a month.

I had a pair of the so called 'quick release' rubber boots (like the white ones pictured above) - and found absolutely nothing 'quick' about releasing them, or indeed putting them on!

I prefer the cheapo velcro ones best. If the horse then steps on its overreach but it will fly off rather than bringing the horse down (which is why you should never tape on over reach boots). I have loads of odd pairs, but they only cost of £7 and most of the time you can just pick them up.

I use the cheap velcro over reach boots and know they would never come off as I have trouble getting them off!! Havn't used the pull on type for years as kept getting my fingers caught getting them on!

Thats what i do (turn them inside out - it's the only (and correct) way to put them on!

I prefer velcro ones though, quicker and easier and come off if they're stepped on.

I just use the velcro overeach boots, think I have the shires ones. We have horrible thick clay mud and they have never come off. I'm the one with the problem getting them off :)
