Horse has tweaked his hamstring. Had physio out last Thursday who gave him a going over and said give him 2 days off and start working again. I did as she said and then had vet over on Mon to do teeth and asked him what he thought as I thought horse was still a bit sore.

He said yes he's got a minor tweak but to keep riding as best thing to keep him moving. He's not lame, just a bit sore and nothing too major to worry about apparently.

I checked him over today and he still reacts slightly when palpitated over the area - small area about 3 inches long.

How long do these things take to heal and what can I do to help it along?

my boy pulled his hamstring out on fun ride last month as you have done i had physio out and gave him couple days off and physio said to lunge him lightley and hack him and she then came out two weeks later he is fine now back into full work he was so sore when he did it not lame just short on it she also gave me some excerizes to do pick back foot up and stretch froward towards front foot

I know two horses that have pulled their hamstrings, one took about 4 or 5 months before he was 100% (lots of weeks of walking, then trotting and doing loads of exercises after every time he was ridden before introducing canter and then eventually jumping). The other is in newmarket at the moment for other issues but the first time she did it and it was just tweaked (other damaged his) i think she was told to perminatly massage after riding for the foreseeable future to try to stop her from doing more damage :)

P.S. you might get more response if you also post in veterinary :)

My old horse tore her hamstring and has been mechanically lame eversince. Tried massaging and stretching when she did it never came right again. You can feel the knot in it and see a tight crease. She isn't lame in trot but in walk she kind of stamps it down heel first.
