pulled ligaments in the back

Has anyone had experience of this?

My horse has pulled/strained a section of ligaments along the spine - if you run your fingers down, you can feel him twitch at the sore spot on the left hand side, and he chucks his head up when you do the same thing on the right hand side.

It's at the base of his withers.

He went head over heels a couple of weeks ago playing in the field - idiot

Does anyone know how long ligaments might take to heal?

I would get a vet to confirm and or referral to a physio for treatment, I had a pony pull ligaments over his pelvic area, vet said 4 - 6 months to fully recover, physio treated him and he was back in full work about 4 weeks later. Another horse I had in reacted like yours in the same place, he had been turned away for about 2 years as a headshaker, he had 2 sessions with my physio and became fully rideable again, the headshaking stopped.

If you do not treat I would expect it to take some time and may cause issues when you start riding again.
