I intend to show my part bred arab three year old next year once he is broken .Cant make up my mind whether to pull his tail or just plait it on the day What would you do have always plaited but when they are done nicely i do like the look of a pulled tail!!!!!!!

Surely there would be breed society guidelines?

Check with the Arab peeps.

Plait any day. Can't bear pulling tails! They do look smart but the one time I tried it on my mare, it bled, so I stopped pretty quickly and plaited from then on!

I work on a showing yard and the horses have to have pulled tails. However they are not just tidy and pulled, they are masacred and look terrible IMHO. I have no idea why it is such a trend in the showing world to have tails like that

Hi, I have a part bred Arab too, that I do a lot of showing with. I have found that it seems to be 'the done thing' to have a pulled tail these days. I don't think I have seen a plaited tail in a PBA class for a long time.
I plaited Axels once I think and I was the only one.

only pure breds which you have to leave totally natural dont even trim whizzers any more

Socksnblazes, that's really interesting - is that from the Arab Horse Society?

I like plaited tails too - I don't like the look of pulled tails, although I understand it's meant to show your horse's bum to the judge...
I always refused to pull tails as the hairs have nerve endings, and it just didn't seem worth it.
A nice plaited tail looks lovely though (if you can plait tails, I never could do that either)

I think a properly pulled tail can look very smart - unfortunately you often see some awful examples of how not to do it!

(I cheat with mine and use a solo comb with a little bit of pulling!

Personally I prefer plaited tails, although I can't think of anything that would make an arab look more ridiculous than a pulled/plaited tail if he carried it high. Part-breds, on the whole, seem to have a slightly more conservative tail carriage, mine certainly did.

General question, to those in the know, if one was showing really seriously would plaiting rather than pulling affect judging do you think? Is it better to go with the accepted flow or make a stand for personal choice?

used to show my pure bred arab before she was pts. had to show them in a natural state long mane and tail. You used to be able to trim their feathers, clip their ears if you wanted to and shave their whizzers off. Last year my friend was marked down twice because the judge said you have to leave the whizzers and feathers on. Not sure if this is a new rule with the AHS you would have to enquire as have not shown in a pure bred class for bout three or four years last time i did i kept her natural as you do with natives
