Ok Samba threw a shoe on my last weekend off for a while!!!!!!!!!!! So I want to make use of the time off and tidy up the scruffy pony.

Today I started pulling the underside and now her mane is all the same length and alot thinner. Imagine the photo but now all the same length and a lot neater.

However I still want about 2" off it, should I just be brave and go with scissors, how do I get rid of the scissor look? Advice all your neat freaks out there. Im useless with these things, I can just about plait.

I advised someone else on mynscissor method the other day...not sure what their results were yet though!

I thoroughly wet (preferably wash) the mane then comb it very flat againstnthe neck, then cut to at least an inch longer than you want it to end up (it will shorten as it dries and lifts) and as it dries the ends look less chopped!

This mane was done with this method...

To give the edges of the mane a more natural look, instead of cutting with both blades of the scissors, sort of use one side to rub/ back comb it and the hairs will break off shorter. I know human hairdressers would despair at that with the breakage of hair, but that's what a natural mane looks like. Unless you want it thinner in which case just continue to pull it in small sessions.

I hate pulling, luckely all mine can get away with haveing long manes.
But i bought a mane rake a while ago and am totaly addicted to it.

Neither do I if the horse is unhappy, wouldnt pull a tail. But she let me do her mane without looking unhappy about it (she was hot from lunging still which prob helped) so I just got on with it.

Whats a mane rake?

It's a rake with blades in, you comb the mane over on to the wrong side, then comb the rake through, and it thins the mane as it goes, it's magic and i am in love with it! :D
I use scissors to shorten then the rake, if you use it on the ends to finish, it doesnt look like it has been cut.

I would use this method ... take a bit of mane and back brush as if you were going to pull it but DONT, take a pair of scissors and cut the amount you want off (so the hair your holding after back brushing some away) and repeat down mane. It looks identical to a pulled mane and doesnt look like it has been cut at all. Quick and easy to.

No no no! No scissors! No matter how you use them they leave a chopped look..

If you're not happy pulling, and it shouldn't be that hard if you've already thinned it out as you say, use a solo comb - back comb the mane as you would to pull it, but instead of breaking the hair you chop it with the "scissor" type blade on the comb. It can leave it thick, but you could thin it out again or use a mane rake.

If you're just not confident, why not get someone pro in to pull it this time and get them to show you how to do it?

Because shes just a happy hacker but I just want to tidy her up etc If she was competing etc I would have a pro out to do a makeover.

Might give Tr0ubles way a go (will let you know) and then try what Somethingorother said or could I just cut up into it like when the hairdresser feathers your hair?

I dont like solocombs, just cant get on with them. I use them on the guinea pig though lol.
