Pulling connemara mane - HELP

Its time to pull my connies mane as it is..well... very long! The pic shows how long it is now and i want it so that it is correct for the show ring. I know the length i need to get it to but i was wondering if anyone had any tips? is pulling a native's mane different to normal? and could i cut to just below the length i want then pull to reduce the 'village idiot chop' look?

First time I pulled my Connie's mane it was longer than that and surprisingly hardly took any time even being quite thick. Had also never pulled as mane before. Not sure about the cut then pull, I did consider it but decided not to risk it.

Personally, I would cut an inch or so longer than you want and then solo comb.

ooooh eeek, no i wouldnt. Ive wrecked a mane with a solo comb and will never use scissors again either.

Pulling wont take too long OP.
