Should it be banned?

Method to my madness, someone in the hunting forum doesn't think we should do it if it hurts the horse...sure you'll all agree it most probably does...
 
There is nothing wrong with pulling a horses mane IMO

theres combs on the market today that have been designed to reduce at 'hurt' a horse may recieve when having there mane pulled so i see no reason as why to ban it

No, it is only like tweezing your eyebrows or waxing your legs...... not pleasant but not exactly painful! Therefore when I stop doing either of those because I don't think the pain is worth it, I will also stop pulling manes!!

My boy won't tolerate anything the slightest bit painful/uncomfortable, even the vet says he has a low pain threshold and yet he stand eating his hay as I pull his mane. I can promise you if it hurt I would not be able to pull his!
 
LOL!! No of course it shouldn't be banned. I prefer my horses to have long manes and they all do, however my English horses have always had pulled manes, and a number of them really enjoyed having them pulled....honestly they did!

It definitely hurts Ernie and Rhi, they both hate it but its their one fault so I forgive them. My mare used to fall asleep though...
 
I have yet to have a horse which didn't hate it (not done by me I add) so I see no reason for it personally.
 
I do have one who will kill you rather than have his mane pulled! The same one who I cant catch!!! He pins you up against the wall and tries to suffocate you! Really aggressively. He's never agressive like this at any other time so I know he really hates it.
He! He! Hes quite a character really!! At 31 though he gets his mane trimmed with scissors nowadays! Am I a bad mummy? I dont think so. He prefers it this way and doesnt care about looking a bit silly for a week or so! But it doesnt ever look as nice as a neatly pulled one.

His mane was never thick so when he was younger i used to trim it with a trimming knife but if they have a thick mane it can get so greasy and matted that I prefer to pull.

Should it be banned? No I dont think so. But if a horse really hates it like mine does then I dont think other means should be frowned upon.
 
I pull my horse's mane. Whilst I'm sure it is not comfortable for him I think that if it caused him that much pain he would not tolerate it. My horse never objects so I don't see why I should stop doing it.
 
My pet hate in the equine world is seeing horses with blocked manes, I'd sooner hog my horses manes then have them blocked, some people are too soft for their own good.
 
Its a personal preference. Some horses dont mind it, others hate it. I wouldnt pull my old mare, however my young one doesnt mind. To ban it would be stupid. Everyone should make their own descision based on their own horse.

So long as the horse does not object then fine...it's the ones that pull manes whilst using sedatives because the horse hates it so much that get to me! My horse is totally au natrel with long wild flowing mane! But obviously I do not show or compete so it does not matter.
 
The newfangled showjumping way- where they just get the scissors and chop them straight, we once bought a young hunter that had a blocked mane- not only is it disgusting to my eye, but its also an absolute nightmare to plait up, makes their mane really think and..pants
 
That does sound as if someone is actually being lazy! I spend a lot of time making my horse's mane look as natuaral as poss, its layered beautifully!!

Banned? No. But if you're sedating your horse so you can pull his mane then you probably need to take a step back and question whether it is really worth it.
 
My horse's mane is always pulled very short. He doesn't like having it done, normally puts up a fight to begin with then settles and tucks into a haynet.

A previous horse went vertical if you tried to pull his mane. He wouldn't even tolerate ANY downward pressure on his mane at all so thinning knife and solo combs were out of the question too. Ended up using thinnning scissors and often got complimented on my 'pulling skills'. He had a thin TB mane though.

I have just started pulling George's mane, I am just doing a little each day, he keeps falling asleep all dozy lip hanging out when I do it! But my goodness it hursts my fingers!! If he protested I wouldn't do it.
 
Mickey cannot stand having his mane pulled. He's been off work from lammi for a while so it's gone wild. We're going out to dressage next weekend - I don't know what I'm going to do with it!! His owner doesn't like it cutting, but I might do it when he's not looking

I think I'll give it a go and if he goes mad I'll have to get the scissors out - sorry rosiie!!!
 
My Sec D loves it ! He leans into it and pulls his 'grooming ' face - weirdo ! Mind you he has got a skin like a rhino so be quite hard to hurt him I would have thought. My Sec C on the other hand hates it and starts threatening to rear if I touch her precious locks

No I definitely don't think it should be banned. Shad doesn't mind it at all. We've had a few who don't like it and one we used to twitch but now we use a solo comb. I hate it when horses' manes are cut with a solo comb but not thinned, or with scissors.
