Any recommendations for tail pulling combs at all? My boy is very sensitive and I cannot pull his mane or tail in the standard manner. I've tried the solo comb rake but it doesn't work for me and now his tail looks a right mess!

There are several ways to get the pulled tail look but all require a certain amount of skill and determination to get to the finish you want.

I tend to use a rake and some pulling to get the desired effect but it takes time to do, should be done over a period of time rather than in one go, damping and bandaging until you get the finish you want, if your horse really will not tolerate a little pulling then the only other options are clipping, which again needs care otherwise you end up in a mess or leaving it to grow out and plaiting.

I would stick with the rake and keep going as it should look fine if you work on it, I use a smart tails one and have never ended up with a mess and I have done dozens of tails with it.

I use thinning scissors - use them down the sides. Pain free and I think it looks quite smart enough for our purposes!

I recently ordered a solo comb rake as I have managed to lose my Smart Grooming one

The Solo rake is absolutely terrible, biggest waste of money ever. My Smart Grooming one was awesome

That's good to know, i have only used the Smart ones :) Will avoid the Solo comb ones when i come to replace!

I use the smart rake and a pair of scissors and sometimes clippers, once you've done it from scratch once it is much easier to keep on top of each time.

First i trim the underneath hairs at the side of the dock, as short as possible but try to make it so that these are not visible when the tail is down.
then rake the top hairs to remove the bulk so it is neat
finally cut the scissors up the side of the long hairs at the side of the dock for a clean finish
I dont know if that makes sense but mayeb the picture helps?
