Just being a nosey moo and wanted to ask what people do with their horses pulling/trimming wise? Do you regularly pull/clip/trim, just occasionally or never at all?

I have pulled Mightys mane once but need it to grow out as previous instructor at the riding club ruined it totally attempting to pull it and it's still got spikes

grrr lol. Don't trim/clip or neaten up anything usually.

Unfortunately after working so long on professional yards my mare is perfectly trimmed all the time, no whiskers, tidy legs, smart mane and pulled tail.
But as she is a tb if she isnt smart she looks a utter scruff!

Highland is not trimmed at all, in fact not even clipped this winter so far, although I do normally clip out everything except the legs. IDxTB only trimmed and clipped enough to make him comfortable.

i never trim whiskers (they need them, for heaven's sake!), i don't pull tails (always used to use scissors, now bought a tail rake, just got to work out how to use it!), i keep tail ends and heels tidy all the time, and tidy up manes whenever the look of them starts to annoy me... the horses that don't compete though, i won't put through the hassle of having their manes pulled, i trim them up carefully with scissors... *awaits deluge of abuse*

basically i inflict as little pain as possible.

I keep mine clipped and trimmed fairly religiously
Tail and mane done pretty frequently, but I use a rake and stripping comb rather than actually pulling. feathers off, tail banged. ear fluff removed etc. They keep their whiskers though

I do like my horses to be neat and trimmed at all times. I found it so difficult to let Amy be au-natural.

Thumper's mane is pulled (not as short as I like it - but it's quite thin). His tail is pulled and banged short (just underneath his hocks, I can't abide a long tail......) His tail is also tangle free and clean.

I don't trim whiskers, and Thumper doesn't have any feather - however if he did, they'd be off.

Well, my arab doesn't get his mane pulled as I leave it long (stands up like a bog brush if short!) I do try to keep his heels tidy and his tail trimmed but natural looking! Other two (WB and ISH) have their manes pulled fairly regularly, although use a rake on OH's mare as she hates having her mane pulled. Bang both their tails and tidy up heels etc every few months.
Never touch whiskers and generally leave ears alone too!

Mine are a mixture really - sec D has a small clip as he gets really sweaty, his mane is pulled but his feathers, whiskers etc are left. Sec C filly is usually untouched but she is going to a show next weekend so she has had her mane thinned and pulled (but not short) and her beard and ears trimmed. The miniature is spotty so he has the very thin appaloosa-type mane and tail - I leave him well alone !

i have attempted to pull Frankie's mane......but he nearly ended up on my head so have given that a miss so far! i trim his feathers and ears (not right inside tho) and a bit under his chin. not his whiskers.

i bought a tail rake and have used that on his tail, it looks good but i need to find out how to get the little bits right at the top out. the rake doesn't seem to grab onto those bits!

No it' won't. You'll have to pull those ones out by hand. You can also use the rake on his mane......

amymay so if i just pull the top bits as i would normally......or is there another way where i am not at risk of hoof to head?

i used it on his mane but i was a bit worried that i was pulling too much out.........i brushed it over to the other side then raked it through. its that the right way to do it? it has instructions but it is in translation of German!

Someone once suggested rubber gloves to pull those bits out. I really need a tail rake - used a medium one once and it was good, but loath to pay out £28 to get a fine one!!

i know mine was £25........i had a bit of a mad moment. but his tail was such a mess so i just had to! now it is locked firmly away!

i remember watching my friend pull the little bits at the top of her horses tail with pliers.............

Have you got some thinning scissors - lots of people use those instead of yanking the hairs out - so you could try that. Would he mind less if you tried pulling the odd hair after you've ridden him, when he's nice and hot???

Yes, that's what the instructions on mine said to do. Just do a bit at a time, and you won't go far wrong. You can always use a pair of little scissors to tidy up the ends later if you feel they look a bit raggy....

thats what i do........i have a pair of hairdressing scissors for the end of his mane! tee hee. ive got a pair of thinning scissors somewhere in all my junk so i'll root them out and have a go at his tail! haha wish me luck

ben and jerrys where do i get one of those things from? pet shop or somewhere?

I am all for trimming and was taught in a showing yard so the habit is ingrained now. I tend to only take whiskers off for a specific event these days though. Someone told me they would walk into a tree if I took off their feelers! Never witnesed it myself of course.

My pony has never minded being poshed up, having been through the trimming exercise since she was shown as a baby, but my tb hates it. Doesn't mind the scissors, but try pulling her mane and she is a demon. It is a bit like being thrown around on the end of a live electricity cable.

Having worked through a number of things that she doesn't like I am now tackling this one. She is fine to have the comb through her mane and I have now identified that the hysterics start when you pick a piece of mane to back comb. So I am now dutifully desensitising her to this action before tackling the back combing action. I haven't tackled clipping yet! Most people would have given up by now, but if I had wanted a long flowing mane I would have bought an Arab. I like order

I'm obsessed with manes... always have the pulling comb out on the yard

Got into trouble the other day for pulling the exmoor's mane

. My colleague was up in arms about 'showing a native in its natural state' but I was thinking, "she's a riding school pony, OFF OFF OFF'. LoL

My pony has a short pulled mane but I've left her forelock long so she looks more 'feminine' (don't ask). Don't trim whiskers but occasional tidy up jaw and ear area. I keep her fetlocks trimmed as she grows these really wierd "I'm half welsh secD" mini feathers on each leg and, as the rest of her is long and leggy and looks like a TB, it looks really bizzare!

Governor is fully clipped (including face and legs - can't stand half face clips), his mane is pulled but looks a bit messy at the moment as his neck rugs have flattened it so it looks longer and isn't on a designated side.

His tail needs a trim but its banged and tangle-free...soft and shiny. I don't pull the top of his tail but I 'razor' it with scissors to keep it tidy and it does look smart.

I have a tidy up every now and then. Bridle path cut, bit of mane on the withers trimmed, feathers off, mane cut by scissors then thinned out with the rake, tail washed and conditioned - but not pulled - and trimmed at the bottom to thicken it up. I leave her whiskers on, she has just been clipped so has no beard - but I will be investing in a cheap pair of trimmers for when it grows back!

Cairo is left in full wonderful clydesdale hairness - his beard is about 5" long - have to push it out of the way to do up the noseband. He will have a clip shortly as he is so shaggy now. Last year in the summer I full clipped him apart from below the knees and his head - looked like an overgrown poodle.

Chancer is left with full feather, mane and tail. In the summer when showing his jaw is trimmed carefully to look as natural as possible, outside tufts removed from ears and his belly fin and bloomers removed.
