My horse already on box rest managed to stand on a nail today ( int the yard not his box ) did not go too far in and was at the back of his hoof usually near where the shoe end would be.

But did bleed when I removed it . He had im anitbiotics yesterday as he managed to rip his nose open which needed stitches , so hopefully will have protection today, gave it a good clean with hibiscrub and have wet poulticed it tonight, how long should I poultice, and is there anything else I should be doing?

He is not really lame on it, will call the vet wednesday or sooner if does go lame, at the moment I seem to be my vets best customer!

As long as he stays sound he should be OK.

My mare is prone to this as has thin TB soles. Only once has it been serious (had to have serious hole made in sole, and sensitive stuff started to overgrow - have never seen a horse so lame) and even then she was back to normal in about three weeks. A good hoof boot (I recommend hoofeeze) is needed if turning out.

had the same last week, tho no blood. me and my friend disinfected it, bathed it, polticed and had his shoe on in a week providing he was sound not lame

He has two more weeks of box rest ( had a hobday and tie back op ) may still invest in a hoof boot though so he can still go for his walks.

Seems to be one thing after another at the moment
 
Is his tetenus jab up to date. Puncture wounds especialy in the foot ,are the worst sort. I wouldnt think twice about phoning the vet,even if only for a telephone consultation.
 
A friends horse stood on a nail whilst we were hacking out and was non weight bearing. We flagged down a car who luckily had some pliars as we had to get the nail out as we had to get him home. He didnt seem lame once the nail was out. It bled but only slightly but a clear liquid came out. The fluid was joint fluid, which we guessed at the time. She got her vet who wasnt worried, cleaned it, gave AB but horse went very very lame so vet came out again, still wasnt worried. My friend told them about the fluid but she was made to feel like a worrier. She decided to get a 2nd opinion who came and immediately refered the horse to Leahurst where he had a GA to flush the wound, was fitted with a surgical shoe with a plate on the bottom and after a long box rest came sound.
The nail did go in next to the frog though.
On the other hand Ive heard of horses do similar and be totally fine.
Fingers crossed your horse is ok.

Certainly was only blood that came out and a little bit at that, however will be keeping a very close eye.

Tetanus is up to date, and will ring the vets ( almost have a direct line anyway ) if at all concerned tomorrow.
