Hello
My horse managed to twist a hind shoe yesterday and stuck the clench into his sole on the inside of his hind foot, I had to get the vet to get the shoe off and he trimmed back the sole a bit.
So antibiotics, poulticing twice daily and box rest until friday when the vet will come back.

I guess my question is - do they always get an abscess from a puncture wound and if he does get one how long will it take to sort it out?

Any other advise appreciated.

Thanks

We had one that did the exact same thnig, we soaked it and polticed twice a day and stuff the hole that the shoe made with clean cotton wool, box est for 10days and a shoes back on a week after that. Plain in the bum but not a massive problem, good luck! x

My horse stood on a nail the thurs before last (nearly 2 weeks ago).I had the vet out because the nail was 4 inches long the vet dug out right to the laminae. He went on antibiotics like yours and I have just ridden him for the first time today. The farrier checked him over this morning I was going to get a gel pad as his was so deep but the foot was so good he didnt need it. When I struggled to keep the wound covered I used stockholm tar which is really thick and helps keep the dirt out it is also antisceptic
That should give you a time scale to work on and he didnt get a infection either.Good luck

a horse on my previous yard did this....the owner sprayed purple spray on it, had it reshod the following day and it went out in a muddy field straight away.......no absess or any other problem! She may have just been lucky, and it isnt what i would have done, but i just wanted to say, chances are your horse will be fine!!
