My horse already on box rest managed to stand on a nail today ( int the yard not his box ) did not go too far in and was at the back of his hoof usually near where the shoe end would be.

But did bleed when I removed it . He had im anitbiotics yesterday as he managed to rip his nose open which needed stitches , so hopefully will have protection today, gave it a good clean with hibiscrub and have wet poulticed it tonight, how long should I poultice, and is there anything else I should be doing?

He is not really lame on it, will call the vet wednesday or sooner if does go lame, at the moment I seem to be my vets best customer!

mine did this a while ago in the field with a twisted shoe, however she was hopping lame. Hot poulticed for 3 days then dry for 3. was also spraying iodine on area when changed poultice.
Hope he is ok!

Agree with Lizzie to keep poulticing for a while even if your horse doesn't seem lame immediately. My horse punctured his sole in similar manner last year, wasn't initially very lame & wasn't poulticed; however a few days later he was hopping lame and sore and had problems with abscesses for the next couple of months.

Any penetration to the hoof should be dealt with by a vet. The foreign object could go through blood vessles, nerves or even a bone. It is impossible to tell what structures are involved with this type of injury.

My horse had a nail in his foot and this is what I was told by the farrier and vet.

My horse was lucky, but I know a horse who had a metal spike go up into her navicular bone.

Please do not try to remove nails etc yourself.
