My TB punctured his sole over the weekend on a sharp stone. Vet removed & fortunatley no sign of infection. She said to hot poultice for 3/4 days then moved onto a dry poultice with purple spray until healed over. He has also been on a course of anti biotics until yesterday. He is much happier on it now.
Yesterday the plan was to move onto a dry poultice but he managed to get the poultice off when I was at work and was wandering around dirty yard with it exposed. I cleaned it up best as I could - very lively back legs!! Decided hot poultuce better again to get any remaining dirt out. This morning - back legs getting dangerous now I changed it for dry animalintex with purple spray on put into a poultice boot & vet wrapped on! Do you think this is acceptable? Will do this until healed I think. Have just googled purple spray & people dont seem to rate it??
Any other suggestions welcomed as to how to dress but he is becoming increasingly difficult to handle - very intolerant orange horse!

I would put the foot in a bucket warm saline to clean it out .Often they will stand with their foot in the bucket.
I have been struggling with an abcess which was underunning and breaking out elsewhere for 3 weeks now cleared up.

Farrier advised now to paint with a hoof hardener cover with a dry pad bandage and boot for a few days .The mare is stabled over night so I take the boot off at night when she comes in and cut off the dressing .Paint with hardener put hardener on the dry pad then bandage with cohesive bandage then duck tape .Before she goes out I put the boot on with more duck tape to ensure it stays on .
I am now in a position where the farrier is coming out in a couple of days to put a protective pad under the shoe .

Hiya thanks for the reply. He will stand with foot in water for a short period of time - a minute at most!!! The problem I have is I cant do a thing with the leg unless head in bucket of feed so limited time! Front leg much easier than waving hinds!
Bit wary of putting hardener at moment as injury still recent although difficult to tell whether the gap is healed over...not sure how long it would normally take to seal up?

You could use stockholm tar it is possible to buy it in a liquid form (much easier to use)to paint it on and then cover with a pad .I think it usually takes a couple of days to seal over .Can you get your farrier to have a look (much cheaper than the vet I find!) He may think a sole pad will help.
Perhaps use the salt water while he is eating then tar and pad .My problem is that the t/b mare has thin soles anyway and she needs a pad on as she can easily bruise it again .
Good luck with 'the wrestling match!

Yes we are dealing with a thin soled tb here too! Took his shoes off back in sept & until now has been doing well.
Hoping farrier out in the next week so will keep as is I think until he has seen it. Will give him a buzz & mention stockholm tar as well.
Thanks!

Get blue spray (oxytetracycline0 from your et "Cyclospray" not purple spary which is indeed useless. No active ingredients in purple spray.
Id hold off the stockholm tar until at least 7 days has passed since the puncture as seems you may be unsure of how deep exactly the puncture might be. Has there been any discharge on the poultice recently?

Our farrier recommended a blue spray from our veterinary surgery. It is called Alamycin and costs about £10.50 but lasts a good while, and is also very easy to direct, i.e. doesn't spray all over the place when you hit the button. (always a bonus with a fidgety equine!)

Most purple sprays DO have an active ingredient- Chlorhexidine. This is an antibacterial. However I do agree that it is quite old fashioned and blue spray is now more commonly used, but it can be useful for hoof problems/minor injurys and should not be discounted as a good general all-round antibacterial.

When my mare had a puncture wound we wet poulticed for 3 days, then kept clean and dry. Used babies nappies as a dry dressing with boot over the top, easy to apply and seemed to do the trick!

if you can keep him in and dry for few days and give a squirt of iodine into it daily, itll kill any bugs and harden up the sole. i use it on all mine regularly and it hardens up sole and frog, no thrush etc. dont know how far you are from the sea, im a 5min hack away from it, its the best thing in the world for any foot/leg cuts or bumps. i ride them in, once they get used to it they lovr it.
