Little jrt is doing really well. Toilet training great, crate training great, walking on lead fine ( not heeling yet) let her off lead for 10 mins tonight and she was great, the problem I'm having is that pup is being rough with our 3yo lab. Lab has such a lovely nature she's putting up with it but it's not fair. They do play together but then pup can get rough. I've tried redirecting her with toys, filled kong etc but the terrier side of her won't give up!! She may have only been out of her crate for a short time when she starts so I don't want to put her away again. If she does it when she is tired then I do pop her away. Any advice on how to stop her?

I would stop the pup and if she goes straight back to pestering the Lab, pop her in the crate for a short time, or set up a play pen arrangement where she can play with toys without annoying the Lab. It is a phase that she will most likely grow out of ime but tbh we had 2 jrt pups together, so they didn't need to play with the adults.

We could set a play pen up, good idea!

I keep pups and adults apart as soon as I’m not happy with the way play is going. Labs are their own worst enemies so you just have to rescue them. It’s hard though as one or the other always seems to be missing out, but it’s not forever.
The Lab hasn't got a bad bone, just want her to tell pup off but she just puts up with it

When we had Lab pups and an adult Rottweiler we crated them alternately for a while and then only allowed them together, with the Rott on a lead but that was for the pups protection, as the Rott was very enthusiastic about playing with them and clumsy.
It took about a month to be able to allow them all free access, under close supervision. It was lovely watching the Rott 'chase' the pups up the yard, pretending that they were too fast for her, until a stranger appeared at the gate, when she shot past them and told them to stay behind her!

Ah how lovely!! The lab loves playing with pup. She is 3 and it has bought out the puppy in her again. It's just the jrt pup has no kill switch and very sharp teeth!!

I like the puppy pen idea. I think the majority of Swedish puppy owners do the same as me, and uses a type of sturdy green compost net to create anything from puppy pens, to simply splitting the whole room into two. This Autumn I've taped 3 together to create a net sliding door, to keep my old cat, and my kitten separate during the nights when we're not awake, and able to stop the kitten from pestering the old cat too much.

I presume that the problem with just going over there to remove her each time she pesters your Lab, is that it risks leading to her starting to try to avoid getting caught by you, so that you can't remove her from her fun.

Splitting the room is a good idea. After posting last night pup has been really good with lab but it won't last!!

My JRT was a dreadful (in a fun way) puppy. She had no off switch at all until about 2 and a bit years old. She was very very full on. My terrier x who was about 3 or 4 at the time would tell her off but not hard enough. We just had to make sure he had a place of safety. Now they are the best of friends and devoted to each other. It will be worth the wait.
