pup search

Well I've got a 10 month old monster on the floor chewing a beef rib and I am wondering where the hell my cute puppy went to...that stage goes past in a flash!!!

yer but we got pepsi our labrottdoberman at a about 4 to 6 months and so we got the chewing and the nightmares but without the supper cute puppy

As I said, if you watch the free-ad publications, you can often pick up a fab dog. I don't necessarily mean an ex-guard. There are people that go out and buy a super cute puppy, without thinking it through. Once it has chewed through their burberrys/mobile, it can end up in the sad trader etc. I have 6 dogs in total, including 2 pedigrees. Not one of them cost me a penny! But then obviously you miss the puppy stage.........

If you do go for the RR X Rottie, if you go for one with a ridge (assuming any of them have one) please check for Dermoid Sinus, know someone who has just spent £1200 on a show puppy only to discover the first week at puppy classes that it had a DS, this is the 2nd one that the person taking the puppy class has found, the other one was done on a 1-2-1 behavioural visit on a much older puppy that then had a really difficult operation given his age. If you don't know how to check for a DS either get someone who know ridgies to go with you, or get a contract where the breeder will pay the operation if one is found within the first year (you shouldn't be paying for a puppy with a DS as the operation is probably around £500), I always feel as well with RR's that with the bitches in particular their heads are either filled with nonsense or the are complete snobs:)!!!
All the RR I know have gone to puppy classes and then either went onto obendience or showing and are very good at both, my bosses one is brilliant at floor obedience, but don't think we're ever going to train him to get beer out of the fridge or put the washing in the basket (the trainer has 2 RR, the dog can be taught anything, the bitch is a snob)
RR do get very aloof as they get older (I walk with a pack of about 11), great as puppies but I can see some of them getting very aloof with strangers. The ones I know are all very well socialised as puppies so never came across issues with guarding towards other people, although I was walking my bosses RR (who happens to be the biggest wuss on the planet) along with my 2 small dogs become a bit funny when a cyclist got a bit aggressive towards me they do seem to be fine as long as the person that they are with isn't being threatened, they do also seem to be worse when they are on the lead.
The ones I know don't mind the cold and wind so much as they hate the rain (walking with dogs heads stuck under you jacket is interesting).
My friend has an Anatolian Karabash (SP?), it's huge (not sure how much it costs to feed), but a big lump, not sure what he would be like with strangers though as he lives in the middle of nowhere and knows everyone that visits.
If the RR X Rottie are an Oops litter see if the parents have been health tested to see if there is anything that could be a problem.

Good luck with whatever you get

Take a look at Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. They're big, can live out and love cuddles. Not sure how easy they are to train tho. I've worked at two yards that have used them as 'guard dogs' and they were both excellent - one used to go on hacks with his owner, the other one Im not so sure about :)

thank u very helpful. we are facing up to what a ridgeback might be like and we think we want a rotty with a bit of ridgeback. we have time so will make sure we get them checked and we find one we want who isnt from somewhere questionable. also the kennel is waterproof so no rain issues.

thanks for the help.

I know someone looking to re-home a Ridgback, weimeraner X due to a family break-up, 2 years old bitch, very sweet and friendly, if your interested i can put you in touch with the lady

I think someone on this forum has one of these, sure she said it was brilliant at hunting, my friend has a Weimeraner that is a real gobby cow and won't shut up, but I'm certain that's because someone taught her to 'Speak', now it won't stop (14yo now and deaf as a post so training her to stop isn't much use now!!!)

hi
a little update we are going to view a rottweiller lab puppie on sunday.
we will get all the checks done and we have decided that we have the time and ability to keep the weight of if it has the sterotype lab food eating monster gene.

also we are only looking and are all determined not to come home with it if we dont think its right for any reason after talking to the owner.
