Not really related but reminded me of a story mum told me a few days ago...

Mum is a vet receptionist and an Irish man in a van came in with 5 pups, demanded an appointment there and then to vaccinate and microchip, didn’t pay and then sold one pup from the back of his van in the car park outside to a couple walking past.

Did he seriously try to suggest that he bought his niece 44 puppies?

According to that article, yes, but not one, without "nieces and nephews", and don't forget the 2 adult dogs.

Still seems very unbelievable, if you ask me, that he didn't plan to sell most or all of them. Why the heck would he be buying malnourished (I sort of hope the dehydrated part was due to the transportation circumstances, and something the poor animals only had to endure for a shorter period of time) puppies + dogs to his nieces and nephews? Why would you give away walking vet bills to "beloved" relatives, so sickly that some are now already dead or euthanised.

A bit scary that Canine Coronavirus was involved in their death, but malnourishment, and dehydration, does make it easier for any bad virus to cause severe problems, so I presume it could just as well had been another virus than Corona.

This story has so many connotations..
was the driver a dealer,a thief selling on stolen dogs,a puppy farmer?
..was the driver the source of the corona virus..and on wards..

In Europe they are training dogs to sniff and detect corona virus..
I m worried for the dogs since we’ve been repeatedly told dogs only get infected if they live in close contact with an infected human...but surely repeated exposure to the infection would predispose them to becoming infected?

It would also be very interesting to follow the money trail, where these animals came from, how the transporter was involved, how long this enterprise was going on and why this consignment of dogs did not raise any concerns at the various ports. There's a lot more to the trade in dogs.
What are people funding/supporting when they buy a cheap/readily available dog with little or no background checks/research?

Canine coronavirus has been around a while, it predates the current crisis by many years. It's that label which has generated the headline/interest but it's not the biggest part of the story for me.

That's terrible! And what the heck about the couple walking by just buying a puppy from a van in a car park, even if it happened to be the car park at a veterinarian. That's just the type of irresponsible buyers who makes it possible for these irresponsible dog sellers to continue.

That is heartbreaking for the dogs. I really hope someone is properly punished for this but I expect they will walk away as usual in these cases.

Sad story but yes canine coronavirus been around for years, completely different to human virus. Common form causes vomiting and diarrhoea, hence the dehydration. Most commonly seen in dirty overcrowded conditions, like a puppy farm ?

This was most likely a member of a certain community. Please do not think this is a normal Irish person. Unfortunately anywhere they go they are pretty much above the law. But if People didn’t buy these puppies there would be no market for them.

Sadly I perceive Irish imports as no better than Romanian, legally wise.
The number of rescues bringing over Irish dogs probably equals the mainland Europe trade.
Yes I know is there probably plenty of decent Irish breeders, but I bet per head of puppy most aren’t. I also acknowledge there are loads of puppy farms here too.

That is so sad. Those poor dogs. It sounds like puppy farmed stock being shipped to UK dealers to sell on to gullible people for a huge profit :( Sadly this has been going on for years and must surely only be getting worse with the current appetite for puppies of any breed, type or health status so it would seem. Tragic.

My post re sniffer dogs was for COVID corona virus...cv 19
My post referred to dogs living in close contact with c19 patients catching the c19 virus...hence should sniffer dogs trained to detect c19 really be doing this high risk job?

We’ve crossed wires re the dog corona virus, which I assume is similar to cat flu..only for dogs?im not in uk now so am genuinely interested to hear more about the illness...is there a vaccine..?
