Hello

I am looking after 4 11 week old border collie puppies for a friend while he is away. They have only been with me a day.

I've just had them out playing with my dog & i've just fed them (they get 1/2 tin of dog food & a handful of kibble each). After allowing them all time to 'do they're business' before going back to bed, I noticed that 2 of them have quite runny pooh, which i put down to the change in environment & the type of food they are having (not my choice as I feed raw).

However, on clearing up I noticed that there is a some blood in one of the 'puddles' of poohs. They are all full of beans, none of them look sorry for themselves & they have all been drinking & eating as I would expect.

Any advice please.

If they have had a change in diet recently then it could be colitis which would coincide with the loose faeces, was the mother vaxed?
You have got one of 2 options, keep a close eye, miss their next meal and give them all chicken and rice for the last meal tonight to try and help bind/dry them, if they are bright and active and drinking your vet will probably ask you to keep a close eye and if it continues after tomorrow or they go down hill then have them in asap.
But even jsut to call the vet and have a chat may put your mind at ease.

Thanks Cayla.

They haven't had a change in diet as far as I know & yes mum has been vaxed, although the puppies haven't been yet. I do feed my dog raw & I wonder if that has exposed them to something 'new' as Dylan does sometimes eat his bones on the rubber mats they have been playing on today. I disinfected the spare stable where they are sleeping, but I didn't think to do the whole yard where they have been playing - god, I hope this isn't the problem.

They have done a far bit of playing with my dog (9 month old lab), which I know they don't usually do with their mum as she is much less tolerant of them. I don't think they have managed to scavenge anything apart from some tufts of grass, horse & sheep pooh, which they won't have come across before. I have been monitoring them this morning & they seem bright & alert. Playing, drinking & sleeping as I would expect.

It's just a worry as they aren't mine. I'm torn between being over cautious as they belong to someone else & not wanting to incur vets fees on behalf of someone else.

I'll keep a close eye on them & if the blood reappears or if there is any decline at all, I think I'll give my vet a call & get him out (don't think I can manage to take 4 puppies to the vets on my own as they haven't been on a lead before). Plain boiled rice for tea I think.

I am pleased to report that everything seems fine with the puppies this evening. They have all passed normal stools & seem completely as I would expect puppies to be.

Thanks for your help. Fingers crossed.
