Puppy choking, nearly gave me heart failure! Also in nl

My final night puppy sitting for my mum this week, all has been fine until all of a sudden sat watching tv, pup asleep, I stocked the fire turned around and pup was half sat up making wierd choking/snorting/hurling noise looking at me pleadingly! My heart stopped, I was just about to hang him upside down and he stopped! Given him a drink and he seems ok? He didn't eat anything, what could have caused that?

Is hanging him upside down the best option? Or just rush to the vets? Just so I am prepared!!
