Very exciting ... I might be getting my first ever puppy

Anyhow, I was wondering if you could recommend any good places for buying the puppy crates and stairgates (will need 2 of each), obviously the cheaper the better ... this puppy lark is tres expensive!

Also insurance - I have had a quote from direct line who does my car and house for £8.50 a month which seems reasonable, will also get a quote from NFU who have the neddies but are there any insurance companies who should be avoided at all costs (similar to those equine ones who can't be named but have leaflets in H&H)

Any finally - puppy training classes, how often do you need to go and what sort of prices am I looking at?

Thanks

Wow how exciting. We've had our pup 5 weeks now so know how excited you must be!

Where abouts are you?

I got mine off Ebay. Loads cheaper than the shops. Dont get conned into going to places like pets at home. They charge through the roof.

As for stair gates. I have them from having the kids anyway. But how big will the pup grow? Would you need a doggie one or would you be able to have a kiddie one? If you can get away with a kiddie on toys are us are cheap, as are argos, (I think they've got doggie ones in there too).

Am looking into puppy training classes myself at the mo. So I'll let you know when I've found out some stuff.

Tarka is insured with Petplan as both ponie are with them too. I forget how much I pay, but I've always been quite pleased with them.

Hope this helps. Goodluck! xx

I have my dog insured through Tesco they have provided excellent service so far IMO. Personally I have had "issues" with a certain insurance company with a red phone when I had to make a claim for my car - just thought Id say thats all.

Anyway how exciting YAY, sorry cant recommend any suppliers but wishing you all the best.

Oh and at the moment.. my puppy is insured with the KC Breeders 6 week free insurace, but will be moved onto Petplan with my OH's dog.

Puppy crates and stairgates, I couldn't cope without them!!

We have a 4 month old pup.

Stairgate, I got the Linden one especially for dogs from ARgos. It's really good. The dog ones are higher than the kiddy ones, and also the bars are narrower. A pup would be able to get through the bars of a kids one.

Crates: I have one for the car, which I got for £36 from Pets at Home.

I have one in the house too, but I borrowed that. I also bought a puppy play pen, consisting of 6 bits of metal fence that attach together. This came from Croft online - v. good site, good choice and quality.

The playpen was great for times when she's very young and you don't want her to be shut in the crate for too long (eg. overnight). Now she's older, she goes in the crate over night and we don't use the play pen.

Have fun!

I'm about to get my new puppy as well!!!! Isn't it exciting.

Fortunately I already have a puppy crate left over from when my other dog was a pup but in terms of insurance I always use Petplan. They are not the cheapest but the great thing about them is that if your dog gets an ongoing condition, a lot of insurers will only pay for treatment for the first year then put an exclusion on it. Petplan pays for the treatment for life. That is what I was told anyway and was the main reason I chose them.

If you were near me I could give you a crate - have a three sat in my shed unused at the mo but too heavy to post anywhere sadly.

I insure both my dogs with Direct Line and have had three big claims in the last 18 months... they paid out in full each time (minus excess of course) without any quibbles so I would highly recommend them. Please read the small print though as the standard policy does have some restrictions.
