Puppy feeding advice

We are collecting our new pup next weekend, he is a Boxer x Sprocker spaniel and will be 9 weeks old. I've just written a list of stuff to go buy before next weekend and when looking in my local pet shop there was an over whelming choice of puppy food on offer. I havn't had a puppy in probably 7 years and I'm sure then there wasn't that much choice!

Can anyone offer and recomendations or advice on what's good and what's not so good before I read up any more on different feeds and my head explodes...

When I picked my boy up I was told to keep him on the same food he was weaned onto until he was at least 12 weeks, to help their digestive system. This was fine as the breeder gave me some food in my puppy pack, it gave me time to find another bag of the same food as it was difficult to find!!!

So I'd ask the breeder what he's being fed and buy more of the same.
 
Ditto galaxy, a good breeder should always give you a supply of the food the puppy has been on. Also a diet sheet etc to help your pup make the transition to his new home, I would contact them and ask them if they can do this.
 
Breeder is a friend not a pro breeder - puppy comes from her bitch being got by a Spaniel and puppy survived a failed abortion - and we do plan to buy a supply of what she has been feeding, I think it is Pedigree Chum stuff, but I'm curious as too whether they may be something else out there that may be better for his type and that he could be changed too eventually.... Thanks!

oh dear... What a situation!

Well I expect it would be best to keep it on what it is on for a little longer and work out what you are going to change it onto and mix it in slowly. My boy was on Hills Natures Best when I got him (he's a german shorthaired pointer), but I struggled to get it locally, so started to look around (and then found out nutrionally it's rated really badly!!) and changed him onto Burns High energy Lamb which is for large breed puppies. When I researched it that brand came out well out of the brands that weren't hidiously expensive. It's £45 RRP but I get it for £38 off the internet. Last bag lasted 2 1/2 month. Hope that helps!!!
 
My boy was on pedigree puppy when I got him, which I didn't like so gradually changed him over to James Wellbeloved and he's been on it ever since (is now 2) and does really really well on it and is in great condition :)
