Hi can any one recommend a good puppy food? The breeder is feeding her a puppy mix and puppy tin food. I was at the pet shop and there seems to be loads of different ones available so not sure which one to get for her! thanks x

Keep her initially on what the breeder has weaned her on to. A GOOD breeder will give you a supply of the feed when you pick her up in order to ensure continuity. The pup's body will have enough stress with moving home to cope with with the change in water (I kid you not!) PLUS the change in environemnt, new people, routines etc. So, until the pup is stable and is producing solid faeces, eating, drinking as normal, then I would maintain the diet the breeder has weaned her on to....that is assuming the pup was healthy on that diet in the first place.

What brand of food is it that the breeder is feeding? I believe there is a Sticky at the top of this forum that gives a traffic light (red/amber/green) diagnosis of the various feeds available.

Let us know where you are starting from and then maybe people can suggest better feeds to move to.

Thanks she is feeding them all puppy chicken and rice mix she said any variety will be ok. I have been looking on the internet and will see what my vet suggests. The breeder will give me some to go home with in 2 weeks time. Thanks. I used to cook my own chicken and rice when I had a dog so could go down this route if that will be better for her.

I wouldn't put much faith in a breeder who said "any variety will do"! There's so much poor quality dog food out there filled with cheap fillers and even carcinogenic additives it's very bad advice tbh.

I wean my pups on to Orijen or Purizon puppy and nutriment raw food. Not cheap but high quality identifiable ingredients and my dogs look great on it.

Sorry, but ALL varieties/brands of puppy chicken and rice mix differ in their composition and the IMPACT that they will have on your wee pup's stomach and rear end at 8 weeks of age. PLEASE find out what brand she is feeding and continue with that until she has adapted to your water supply and other routine changes in life.

Sorry, but such comments as 'any variety will be ok' do not instill me with the confidence that you are buying from an experienced, GOOD breeder.

Do not want to start up another diatribe as ran last time, but I can't stop myself saying the above purely in the hope of benefiting your pup.

The breeder has been very helpful. I will ask her to email me the brand she is feeding. She is giving a puppy pack and the food so I will have enough for a few days but would like to get some in for her so I don't run out!

I use arden grange for my pup and she looks well on it. I also mix in some wainwrights tray wet food. Agree you need to make any changes very gradual.

Agree make sure the transition from her normal dog food to what you want to feed her is very gradual. It does matter which brand she is feeding, so "any variety will do" isn't great! There is a sticky on the dog forum about dog food or have a look on http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

I feed my dog arden grange. Stay away from most supermarket dog foods, especially Bakers.

Cooked chicken and rice is ok for when they have an upset tummy, but don't feed this all the time as lacking in nutrition. Also feed for her life stage as she will require different levels of certain vitamins/minerals than when an adult or senior etc.

yup stay away from supermarket brands; arden grange & james wellbeloved are good. There are many higher end fancy grain free foods available but none of my dogs have done anything but lose weight on them (i have 6 collies).

ok will have a look at that. Thanks,

Hihosilver.....genuine question here.....OP...do you know what you are looking for in order to assess what is a 'good' dog food and what is a 'bad' dog food? Just asking, as by people giving you different brand names it doesn't necessarily give you the skills by which to make an impartial judgement and everyone has different standards, so what I think is great, someone else may thinks is crap!

I suppose that is true-what suits one dog might not suit another breed. I would hope that a good balanced puppy food would provide the correct ratio of nutrients
to ensure that the puppy grows strong and healthy.

Suggest you do some reading up as to the merits of the various ingredients that are found in our dogs food nowadays. Learn to understand the implication of the ORDER in which the constituent parts are listed. Learn to understand the difference between chicken and chicken meal and any other descriptions and if you wish to truly understand the difference then go for a walk around a factory. Meal = pulverised beaks and feet if you are lucky! :)

Read up about fillers and grain: sugar beet etc and the impact on allergies etc.

Read up (especially on some of the USA sites re the various re-calls they have had) re the carcinogenics and the e-numbers that cause hyper activity.

I could go on, but I think the above will give you enough to keep going for a while.

If you have any questions re diet, please feel free to come back and ask...either on here or by PM.

PS PLEASE do NOT believe the marketing hype re dog feeds from the various brands in this country! :) Do some in-depth research on USA sites to be enlightened!

Bet the breeder is feeding them Bakers.....

Or some other nasty carcinogenic filled rubbish, first ingredient cereal, fourth or fifth, sugar. Fab!

This is the poster who keeps on giving. I went to a lot of trouble to get a friend to post her dry/wet dog food index as a sticky and to keep it here at the top of the board. It is a useful starting point, green is good, red is horrible.

You don't need a specific puppy food: a Wainwrights, for example, is almost identical for puppy and adult trays. Puppy food can be seen as a marketing myth.

Op, allow the puppy several weeks on her current diet before you think of changing diet. Also allow a few weeks to change over slowly.

I think royal canin do a breed specific food....so you can get food specifically for cavachons now. Get that one it will be great.

Haha, love it, seriously though, this from the op is typical of her previous postings, will get lots of advice and then ignore it all and do something completely different.
