A dog trainer has commented that my 6 month olds Spaniel's food might be a bit high in Protein for him, making him hyper (Orijen). My thoughts are that he's just a Spaniel! Anyhow he's not very fussed on his food, so I thought now is a good opportunity to try him on something else. He does get Natures Menu wet food as well, so what do you recommend? It needs to be fairly easy to obtain as I'm not the best at remembering to order 😂. Bonus points if it's stocked at Pets at Home or Jollyes as both are nearby.

I don't like very high protein levels in puppy food. I'm actually not a fan of puppy food in general and would probably have moved onto an adult variety by now.

What would you feed instead? I don't really understand the concept of puppy food either, but I obviously don't want to get it wrong, so just did what most people do!

ETA - If I could feed both my dogs the same, that would be a bonus! (the other is an aged German Shepherd). They both say the other's food is much tastier 😂

I've fed all sorts over the years, Skinners, DUCK, Autarky, Fish4Dogs, AVA, James Wellbeloved, Jollyes Lifestage, Dr Clauder's, Harringtons, Markus Muhle, Cavom, that generic fish-based one....there was a really fancy high meat content one too that was short dated in the shop and cheap but I can't remember the name 🤣

I would say your puppy is just being a spaniel puppy !!

Orijen is a good quality food, I fed Arcana to my puppy, it's made by the same company and is a bit cheaper ( and lower protein). I did have to swap out for a food higher in calcium phosphorus, as my puppy had leg issues to start with, but went back to Arcana when I could. He is now gradually swapping onto raw.

I suggest a different breed of dog, possibly a Yorkshire terrier. I keep suggesting this to my OH whenever he voices a whinge about the energy levels.

If you want convenience (you say Pets at Home so local place?), then why not go online? I would-obviously-recommend raw, which most dogs seem to love. However, one of mine reacts very poorly to chicken, so perhaps start with a single protein such as turkey, always recommended as a starter protein. My lot are raw fed, but I’m not crazy strict about grain, so they get random scraps. DAF is reliable, I find, and has a good variety.

one of the big important things in puppy food is the calcium: phosphate ratio, get that wrong and you cause nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, also called Rubber Jaw. It’s horrendous and it happens, I’ve seen it and diagnosed it, caused by not feeding the correct life stage nutrition for growing animals

have a look on allaboutdogfood.com - rates pretty much every food out there and you can filter by price per day etc. i think wainwrights is a good cost effective option, which is what rory is on now. tried him with butternut box for a while but he’s picky and leaves it half the time, so for that price i’d rather he leave something cheaper🤣 i like lily’s kitchen aswell, but same story for him lol

Yes, I aways check that before feeding any new foods.

That's the thing, it's very difficult to find any information apart from they should have higher protein.

Is was the trainer that suggested it. I think he's pretty laid back for a Spaniel! He goes to puppy classes, for OH's benefit as I thought they could train him how to train his dog a bit better 😏. He's sometimes a bit hyper there, but only usually like it at home when he's overtired. Other than that he's usually pretty normal, but it did get me thinking, I picked a high protein food, because I thought that was right, but maybe it's not the best thing for him.

I’d just feed him a decent quality food, whatever suits your spend limits.
My lab hasn’t been on puppy food at all, but has been on quality stuff. She looks great.
If your older dog is in a normal adult food I’d put spanner on that as well.
