as opposed to them being with mum and siblings a bit longer?

I may have put a deposit down on a 5 week old GR :D and have spoken to vet etc about jags. Now last dog, due to a house move that went wrong at the last minute, we didn't pick up until 12 weeks. I very thoroughly socialised him and he was great, very confident outgoing dog all his life who was also extremely easy to house train and already great with teeth etc before he came home.

This breeder is having one of the pups and two more are staying on for a couple of weeks due to buyers holidays. I have a week at work in puppy's 9th week where I really have to be there and while doable between OH and I, it would be better I think if puppy stays put until he's 10 weeks and I can dedicate three weeks AL to new puppy at home.

What says AAD on the subject?

8 weeks is ideal , but in the situation you describe I think it would be sensible to leave the pup another couple of weeks. Hopefully the breeder will do separate things with the pups that are staying a little longer so they still get some basic training and socialisation. I kept a pup until 12 weeks from my last litter as she was going to Spain, and started sleeping her separately from her sibling, who I was keeping, and took her out for car rides, socialisation etc. Staying with me longer had no effect on her, she travelled by road and ferry to Spain very confidently.

Congratulations MC, exciting!
I actually prefer puppies to come at 10 weeks provided they are with a decent breeder.
My last flatcoat was 10 weeks and no problem. She was not taken off the breeders premises, some of her siblings but not all had gone. She slept in a stable where she was born but had the run of the garden and came in the house in the day. She was practically house trained! The transition to me was seamless, she settled into a crate in the dog room at night and was with us in the downstairs part of the house in the day.
She did sing in the car the first time but that quickly stopped. They do learn from the other dogs. It must be harder if they go to be an only dog.
Good luck, reports and pictures essential!
