Got a new puppy last night, for the last 4 or 5 hours he has been totally silent and lying in his basket sleeping or looking at me with sad eyes...this is my first dog and I don't know if he is just tired or actually sickening for something. He had a 2 and a half hour journey home last night, but seemed to settle pretty quick. Overnight he woke at 3, 5 and 6 am, then I got up at 7 to feed him and play with him. Seemed fine, then a busy morning "helping" me clean the house. By lunchtime he wanted to sleep so after a nap I took him down to the yard in the car, then on the way back stopped off at the pet shop. He was sick in his basket which I put down to too much time in the car. We got in about 2.30 and ever since he has just been lying down. He also hasn't gone to the toilet at all since about 11 this morning which also seems odd as until then it was every hour or so! He's only had a tiny bit of water since his lunch. Have I overdone it and exhausted him or should I be calling the vet? Sorry its a bit long-winded but not sure what to do! Oh btw he is a 7 and a half week mini dachshund, and passed his health check on Thursday with the breeder. Hopefully I am just being a hypochondriac on his behalf....

Has you puppy had his vaccinations yet? If not then you really shouldn't be taking him anywhere in case he comes into contact with unaccinated dogs.

The sleeping lots is perfectly normal for a puppy. They will play for short bursts, and then sleep lots to recover their energy. It is also normal for them to get up several times during the night, and this is usually to go to the toilet as they have very small bladders at their age.

The sickness could be down to the traveling, but if you feel he is off his food and water too then it won't hurt to ring a vet and ask their opinion.

Tbh it just sounds as though you've done too much with him and he's knackered!

He's also quite young to have left his mum and I imagine he's quite small - probably just a huge amount to deal with in 2 days. Try and give him lots of quiet time in his crate - we always put a blanket over the top with new puppies so that they feel secure. Good luck

He's having his first jab on Wednesday... have been told by quite a few people that he should be going out and about but being carried, and short car trips, to get him socialised, etc. I wouldn't take him anywhere near another dog to be honest, let alone allow him on the ground. But anyway he is fine today, did another short trip in the car and much happier. I think I just overdid it a bit!

Nudibranch please read the post re. Jabs. You may be excited to take your puppy out but with Parvo pretty rife it may be a bit more sensible to wait the extra few weeks and know he's properly covered.
