I am collecting my new border collie puppy next week, i havnt had a puppy for a few years now and would appreciate any housetraining advice you might have. She will be nearly 10 weeks by then.
What sort of things did you find useful, what did you do etc

I have a crate/cage and tiled floors!

Thank you :)

hi, my gordon setter pup has just turned 1year so i still remember the puppy bit. makesure you have a mop and bucket on hand !! also loads of newspaper.i did try the nappy pad things you can get but they are rather expensive and my boy chewed them. i had him in a cage(crate) at night with loads of newspaper and an old blanket. you will get plenty of bags of soiled paper and loads of washing for first few weeks. big tip with the cage ALWAYS feed your pup in it. mine very quickly worked out that going in his cage ment food. also leave her init for a bit after. try doing little and often so if your feeding 3 or 4 times a day they soon get the idea.watch you dont give her too much feed as they can very quickly get upset tum,she may get this a bit at first due to change of home ect. you will get crying at night but if you stay tuff and ignore it they do get over it and sleep. dont keep going down and letting out ect at night as you will make a rod for your own back!!!!!
good luck enjoy and remember the puppy stage passes very fast so take loads of photos and enjoy.hope this helps abit.

me again just remebered if you put a blanket over the top and back of the cage it makes them feel more secure. and be ready for running out to the garden every few minutes for a peewee !!!!!!!!

Do you want my puppy training guide:rolleyes::D it covers everyhting, but I warn you it's long, saves me babbling onto new owners when I give a rescue puppy out though:o
Pm me you E.mail addy if you think it would help ya:D

Cayla, would your guide be too long to post in a thread? Even if it took multiple posts you could get the whole thing stickied up top, I think lots of people would benefit from it. :D

OP, I am hugely jealous of your tiled floors. :p Take pup outside every hour on the hour and after eating and drinking, praise like a mad thing when she goes ("GOODGIRLWEEWEEESYAAAAAY!", your neighbours will think you're mental) and just ignore and thoroughly clean up accidents with a good detergent. As with mothers of newborns, sleep when baby sleeps. :p

Start hoarding newspaper!!
Those puppy pads were rubbish... Betsy chewed them. We had newspaper at every doorway at first, then moved the paper closer and closer to the back door.
Dont bother wearing really nice clothes, moving puppies to paper while they are peeing is not a very clean task!
Ditto on the 'weewee' and 'poopoo' chants... I do some crazy dance / chant... my neighbours do think i'm a drunk.
We still have afew sheets of paper near the backdoor, incase she needs to go but the door is closed. She has paper in the crate but has never ever gone in there. She will hold it all night! Yesterday morning i let her out and I was amazed by the amound of poop she had been holding all night bless her!

I have never used pads or newspaper because i feel like it tells the dog its ok to pee inside.

Take the pup outside every 20-30 minutes and when they pee say the command you want to use and then praise the bjesus out of them.
I will also keep the pup attached to me in the house so i can keep an constant eye on them. As soon as they start to squat outside double quick.
