Reassure me! I've turned in to one of those worrying parents!

Puppy is 8 weeks, arrived weeing and pooing on incontinence pads, quite happily. Now it is 50/50 whether he wees in the right place and I cant get the bu**er to poo on it!

Gets loads of praise when he does get it right.

I follow him round like a stalker waiting for him to show any signs, but he keeps sneeking off when i'm not looking and doing the deed.

Doesn't go in the same place, each time.

I do realise he's a baby, but any suggestions gratefully received!
 
Are you putting him outside or on the pads when you think he is going to go?

With ours we just took him out everytime after eating, waking up or every few hours (if not been out for a while).

What do you do if you find him doing it in the wrong place? Is it at night - or any time?

When Loki first arrived I made sure I took him out and waited for him to go then made a fuss of him - eg. in the mornings or when I came home.

You need to get a command for 'do you want to go outside?' and one for 'go for a wee' - then he can ask

Our two pups have been brilliant.
We don't use those pads. They sleep in the porch with paper down at night. When they wake up in the morning, they go straight outside for 20 minutes. Then they are aloud in the house (kitchen/dining room only, but dining room has a sofa they like to sleep on). Then they usually just fall asleep after a mad few minutes in the house. Then when they wake up and get fidgity, they go back outside. They can come back in after about 10 minutes. When they eat, they stay outside for 20 mins afterwards. They are only aloud in the lounge after they have been outside, and under strict supervision.

They have already learnt to sit at the door when they need the toilet thanks to this method, and they aren't even quite 10 weeks old yet!

It sounds mean chucking them out all the time, but they don't mind it- they love playing outside

we have only had 2 accidents in the house (both off the dog- the bitch hasn't had a single accident!).
 
He's going inside as he's tiny and my garden is up some steep steps. So have pads in the house. One by back door, one by front and one in bedroom.

If i find him mid act, I pick up and put on mat.

My other dog is trained to go on "go to the toilet" but he is just so scatty I can barely get his attention!

Perhaps I need to start takinghim outside, but i'd like the safety net of him using the pads...
 
If it's any help, if we go out and leave Bumble Dog she pushes a log out in the kitchen everytime in spite - and she is 11

If you use pads, you are ging to train your pup to alwasy wnat to poo or wee on the pads - so you may be giving pup mixed messages by saying he can poop on the grass too.

Personally FMC I'd get into the habit of taking him/her out every 30mins, after meals, after waking, after playing, after visitors have been and I'd keep my beady eye on the pup.

Its just as quick to shove them outside on the grass.

If you have steep steps invest in a plank cos we were worried about the dog jumping up and down steps (esp during those early days when the bones are forming / strengthening still), OH got some planks so the dog could walk up and down those.
 
I think you're right about going outside, would much prefer it. The steps are really really steep and he is a Patterjsck puppy, so about a 1/3 of the size of a cat....

Evenso, I will start chucking him outside with Baggie at intervals, thank you!

I'm sure he'll get the hang of it, in all of the excitement he's probably just forgetting and things are slipping a bit in that department.
 
As said before i would chuck him outside, i have been told boys are harder to train than girls when it comes to this. We always used to put the pups outside at regular times and after food, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. As adults they still go out first and last thing but will sit by the door if they need to go out.

Perhaps having 3 pads is confusing him? Especially as they are 3 different places. We have never used paper/pad training as have always been told it is harder to get them off this and onto the whole going outside thing. Not sure if this is true though.

Teaching to go on comand is a useful one, especially when you want them to hurry up and not amble round the garden as one of ours tends to. All i can say is lots of praise when he goes in the right place and i would try to take him outside, but i get what you're saying about his size and your garden so only you will know whether it's ideal.

When we got our pup (she is now 1 year old) we were told not to use the pads as it teaches them to "go" in the house. We were off work and school for a couple of weeks and just followed her round the house constantly. We were both knackered and it was like having a new baby. We put her outside every 20 mins and after she had woken and eatenm first thing in morning and last thing at night. You get to see the signs. there is the poo trot - they seem to trot round in circles before the go and the wee walk. Again going in circles over the same place again and again. Loads and loads of praise (not food) when the do "go" outside. Got there eventually and now she sits at the door to go outside but we still have the odd accident but she knows she has done wrong. Make sure you get a good odour neutraliser as they even if we can't smell where they have been and associate that with their toilet.
 

No harm in giving them a treat for performing their motions outside at all.

Pup pees / poos, click then treat. Then when the habit of click and treat is firmly established then introduce cue word - busy girl / go wee or whatever as the pup "goes".

Pups are flipping hard work. Such a killer!
 
We have just got another dog, she is 10months old and is not house trained.
When she first had acciedent indoor we just put her straight out, and now after 4 days she asks at the door and goes on command outside

When bud was a pup, we used the training pads at the patio door for a while, untill he went in one spot then he started asking to go out, when he did lots of praise, he new goes on* toliet*.

Its so time consuming! Could not imagine having 2 lol
